Microsoft finally renames Project Spartan browser to Edge in latest Windows 10 preview

Windows 10's July 29 release date may be fast approaching, but that doesn't mean Microsoft isn't still packing on new features onto its newest Windows 10 builds. Today's Build 10158 brings numerous new features as the OS is prepared for its final release.

First off, Project Spartan is finally called Microsoft Edge in this build. It's not just a name change either; there are several notable updates over previous Spartan builds:

  • You can add a 'Home' button to the browser via the Advanced Settings menu
  • Bookmark importing from other browsers is now supported
  • There's a cool new dark theme
  • You can choose to open the browser with a Start page, the New Tab page, previous pages or a specific set of pages
  • New Tab pages can feature either top sites or suggested content
  • There's a password manager on board
  • Tabs can be dragged and dropped to new windows
  • msft_edge_dark-1024x660One important note: Edge will completely replace Spartan, so you'll have to back up your favorites before updating to Build 10158 if you want to save them (which you can do via the instructions on the Windows blog).

With every new build of Window 10 Microsoft has been refining its interface; this time around it's cleaned up some UI glitches and Tablet mode animations, as well as improved support for legacy apps in Tablet mode. Swiping up from the left side of the Start menu will now show all of your installed apps.

Cortana meanwhile is getting some of the updates recently brought to Windows 10 Mobile, including tracking your flights and packages, and alerts for your commutes to home, work and the airport. You an also now send emails straight from Cortana by dictating the email address, the subject and the message. Cortana even lets you correct the text with just your voice.

Other updates include GIF support for the Photos app, a timer on the Snipping Tool and battery fixes for the Surface Pro 3. For more on this build and what's coming, check out Microsoft's Blog post linked below.

Surface 3 LTE gets certified, signifying a timely market release

Back when the Surface 3 was officially introduced to the market Microsoft informed us that an LTE model will be on its way for a later release too. Several months have passed since and the Surface 3 LTE is still nowhere to be found. It continues to be listed in Microsoft's online store but no concrete launch dates have been revealed so far.

Fortunately though, it looks like the Surface 3 LTE might be closing in to an imminent market debut, as the tablet was recently spotted in the database of the Global Certification Forum. This signalizes that Microsoft is almost ready to push the device on the market, and will probably do so once these formalities will be dealt with.

The LTE-enabled Surface 3 seems to have been certified on the 26th of June, so technically speaking we shouldn't have to wait much longer before Microsoft will give us the option of actually buying one.

Surface 3 LTE gets certified, signifying a timely market release

The model is listed under the name of "Surface 3 LTE" and much like the name suggests, there's really not much to say regarding the slate's internals aside from the addition of LTE radios. The slate will be offered with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and prospective customers will also be able to pick a beefier model equipped with 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD.

Aside from these characteristics the Surface 3 LTE has the same hardware internals as the Wi-Fi-only model. This includes a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom x7-Z8700 quad-core processor with frequencies of up to 2.4 GHz in Intel Burst technology, a 10.8-inch ClearType display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 x 1280, an 8 MP primary camera along with a 3.5 MP front-facing sensor, and a battery that managed to deliver 5.45 hours of video playback in our own tests.

As yet we do not know how much the Surface 3 LTE will cost, but our guess is that it should have a price tag higher by about $100 over the Wi-Fi model. Whether or not it's worth it is a different story for another time, one which will be told once the slate hits the shelves.

10 iOS 8.4 Release Date Tips

Now that we know the iOS 8.4 release date will land on Monday or Tuesday, we want to provide some useful tips that should come in handy on the iOS 8.4 release day for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Several weeks ago, Apple pushed its iOS 8.4 update into its beta program ahead of a public release for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. And there it has remained under the watchful eye of Apple, its developer partners, and those that are a part of the Beta Software Program.

At WWDC 2015, Apple unveiled its new Apple Music platform that will compete against the likes of Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, and others. And it will be the iOS 8.4 update that brings Apple Music and a new Music application to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users all over the world.

    iPad Air 2 iOS 8.3 Review - 1

The Apple Music release date is set for June 30th which means that the iOS 8.4 release date is close, extremely close. It will take place tomorrow or it will take place on Tuesday, the same day that Apple Music goes live. Right now is a great time to start preparing for the iOS 8.4 release date and it's also a good time to start thinking about your plan for the release date itself.

With an iOS 8.4 release date taking place in just a few short hours, we want to make sure you're ready. These iOS 8.4 release date tips for iPhone and iPad should help.

    Get Familiar with iOS 8.4

The first thing you'll want to do is get familiar with the changes coming with iOS 8.4. We don't have the full, public change log just yet but here's what we know.

We know that it will be coming with a brand new, revamped Music application that comes with cosmetic changes and some other tweaks. The video below will give you a pretty good idea about what to expect from Apple's new music application coming with iOS 8.4.

iOS 8.4 is also bringing the company's new Apple Music service and we've put together a quick guide that will rundown all of the key parts to the platform. The free three month trial is just one of the reasons why you might want to think about installing the iOS 8.4 update on your device.

And finally, it you failed to download iOS 8.3, it's going to deliver some of the changes that arrived with Apple's current iOS 8 update. If you're not familiar with those changes, you should have a look at the slideshow below because it will bring you up to speed.

iOS 8.3 vs iOS 8.2: What's New in iOS 8.3

New iPhone Emoji in iOS 8.3 New iPhone Emoji in iOS 8.3

Apple adds over 300 new iPhone emoji in iOS 8.3. There are new Emoji like the Apple Watch and a new Mac, but most users will focus on the addition of more family choices including more kids, families of two men or two women and now there is an option to change the skin tone of many emoji.

Read: How to Use New Emojis

With this update you can tap and hold to choose the skin tone of an emoji icon for many emoji options and then tap to pick the color option. Tap and hold on a new color option to make it the default.

The iOS 8.3 emoji keyboard for iPhone now offers continuous scrolling so it is easier to scroll through the emoji options and find the ones you want.

The new emojis and the new emoji keyboard are the biggest changes though there are some smaller ones tucked away deep in the operating system.

How to Downgrade to iOS 8.3

If you do decide to install the iOS 8.4 update, you should know that there will be a way for you to drop back down to iOS 8.3 if the update doesn't meet your standards. You won't be able to drop back down to anything older than iOS 8.3 so you'll really want to be sure about iOS 8.4.

    iPhone 6 Worth It 2015 - 3

The process is only going to be open for a limited time and it's going to be fairly involved so you'll want to research the process before you install the iOS 8.4 update. We have a downgrade guide that will teach you the basics and we'll update you on the iOS 8.4 to iOS 8.3 downgrade process once the iOS 8.4 update is released.

You Don't Need to Install iOS 8.4 Right Away

Remember, Apple never forces you to install its latest software updates and some of you could benefit waiting a few days before installing the iOS 8.4 update.

iOS 8.4 is likely going to include bug fixes for iOS 8 problems but it will likely bring some problems of its own. These problems probably won't affect everyone but the risk is still real. If you're nervous you can wait a few days, gather feedback from iOS 8.4 users and see if issues iron themselves out. Often times, battery drain problems will settle after a couple of days.

iOS 8.4 is going to be around for awhile. Apple isn't expected to release another big iOS 8 update ahead of iOS 9 which means that you can take your time, look into issues, and decide if iOS 8.4 is worth the hassle. Take your time, there's no reason to rush into anything unless you're dealing with unfixable problems on an earlier version of iOS 8.

    iOS 8.4 Release Time

We don't know the exact iOS 8.4 release time yet but you should start checking for the software starting at 9AM PST on Monday or Tuesday if needed. Apple always rolls its updates out between 9AM PST and 10:30AM PST. If the update doesn't arrive in that window Monday, you'll probably see it arrive in that same window on Tuesday. There's no reason to check for the update today, tonight or Monday evening.

Do These Things Before Installing iOS 8.4

You're going to want to come to the iOS 8.4 release date prepared. We recently outlined some steps to take ahead of the iOS 8.4 release date and we recommend taking a look at those so you and your device are prepared before the iOS 8.4 update starts rolling out. A little planning will go a long way.

    Install iOS 8.4 at Home

If this is your first iOS update or you've run into installation problems in the past, we recommend installing the iOS 8.4 update at home or wherever your comfort zone is.

    iPhone5s-1

If you install it in class or at work or while you're traveling, you could get distracted and that's not going to be ideal if you run into problems with iOS 8.4. Imagine running into an issue right when you need your tablet for a presentation or having to deal with a problem on your phone when you want to capture a moment during vacation.

iOS 8.4 isn't a huge update but you'll still want to install it in a place where you have easy access to resources if something goes wrong. Logins, fixes for problems, and so on. Wait until you get home so you don't disrupt your work flow or your trip.

Put Aside Some Time to Update

We expect iOS 8.4 to be a fairly sizable update, bigger than your standard incremental update, and it should take more than a few seconds to download and install.

If you don't have a fast Wi-Fi connection, you'll need to set aside extra time to ensure the installation goes smoothly. We also recommend setting aside some time in case you run into problems with the software installation. Apple's servers can sometimes get slammed and a few times it has taken us well over an hour to get an update up and running. If that happens, your device will need your attention.

We expect a flawless experience for most of you but you're better safe than sorry. Put aside 30 minutes so that you can install the update properly and handle any issues that pop up.

Don't Panic If There Are iOS 8.4 Problems

There will be iOS 8.4 problems but there's no need to panic if you run into an issue right off the bat.

First off, there are easy fixes for installation problems. There are also tons of potential fixes for common iOS 8.4 problems. This list here will help get you started.

    iPhone-6-4

Here's the deal. If iOS 8.4 arrives with big issues, Apple will likely address them soon after the release. If you encounter smaller bugs though, you'll have to be proactive after the release.

We're still not sure if the company has an iOS 8.4.1 update up its sleeve or not. Even if it does, there's no guarantee it will fix your problems. So, again, take a look at those fixes and poke around for others ahead of the iOS 8.4 release.

Here Are Some Resources If You Need Them

If our fixes don't solve your iOS 8.4 problems or assuage your fears, Apple's discussion forums are another place to look at on iOS 8.4 release day. There, iPhone and iPad users will share their own issues and perhaps, temporary or permanent fixes for iOS 8.4 problems. Search for your problem and if you can't find it, ask around. There is typically someone willing to help out.

Social media sites like Twitter are also helpful places to go should something come up during the iOS 8.4 installation process or after you get the software up and running. We also recommend the MacRumors forums.

    iOS 8.4 Jailbreak

An iOS 8.4 jailbreak might be released after the update rolls out to the public. Even if developers fail to release one, you'll have an iOS 8.3 jailbreak at your disposal.

    iPhone-6-3

Jailbreaking isn't for everyone and you'll want to sit down and do your research before you make a move one way or the other. We've been providing a ton of resources to prospective jailbreakers over the past few weeks and we recommend scanning our tips before the iOS 8.4 update arrives.

iOS 8.4 Release Date & Time: What You Need to Know

The iOS 8.4 release date is down to two very specific days and we think we have a pretty good read on the iOS 8.4 release time. With just hours to go before Apple's next big iOS 8 release, we want to rundown everything iPhone and iPad users need to know about the iOS 8.4 update's arrival.

In April, Apple confirmed an iOS 8.4 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update is heavily focused on music as it delivers a brand new Music application alongside the company's new Apple Music platform that will compete for customers with Pandora, Spotify and others.

Earlier this month, at WWDC 2015, Apple talked up its new Apple Music service and confirmed a specific release date for music lovers. It also affirmed plans to release an iOS 8.4 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. an update that could very well be the last iOS 8 update before Apple pushes out iOS 9. The iOS 9 release date is confirmed for the fall.

    Early iPhone 6s Release Date - 4

Over the past few weeks, we've taken an extensive look at iOS 8.4, its release date and its release time and today we want to take one last look at everything you, as iOS 8 owners, need to know about the iOS 8.4 release date and the iOS 8.4 release time.

Our goal is to help you get as prepared as possible for the update's arrival and with just a few hours to go before release, now is a great time to get caught up. Here are the most important things to know about the update's release date and release time.

    iOS 8.4 Release Date

Apple hasn't confirmed the iOS 8.4 release date but thanks to the confirmed June 30 Apple Music release date, we know that it has to come on one of two days.

Your Apple Music subscription delivers most of the iTunes Library.

Your Apple Music subscription delivers most of the iTunes Library.

iOS 8.4 will deliver Apple Music inside the new revamped Music application which means that the iOS 8.4 release date has to be Monday or Tuesday, June 30th. Apple has a tendency to release new iOS updates on Monday morning though it's possible that we'll see the software push the same day that Apple Music goes live.

Again, Apple hasn't confirmed either day but with Apple promoting Apple Music ahead of Tuesday's release date, it's clear that all systems are go. Keep an eye out for the update starting Monday.

    Prepare Now

You still have some time before the iOS 8.4 update is released for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which means that you still have time to prepare for the update's arrival.

We recently put together a list of steps that will help you prepare for the iOS 8.4 release date on Monday or Tuesday. You don't need to follow every single step but some of these will help minimize the risk for iOS 8.4 problems. Take a look at them, especially if this your first time installing an iOS update.

    Who is Getting iOS 8.4?

As a reminder, if you are using a device that's capable of running iOS 8, you will gain access to the iOS 8.4 update and its features. If you don't know if your phone is able to run iOS 8, here's a list of the devices getting iOS 8.4 next week:

  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4s
  • iPod touch fifth-gen
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad Air
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPad mini 2
  • iPad mini
  • iPad 4
  • iPad 3
  • iPad 2
  • All of these will share the same iOS 8.4 release date.

    iOS 8.4 Jailbreak

We still don't know if developers will release an iOS 8.4 jailbreak on the iOS 8.4 release date so you'll want to keep an eye open once Apple makes the software available via its servers.

    ios-8.3-jailbreak

We recently saw the release of an untethered iOS 8.3 jailbreak and we've heard that an iOS 8.4 jailbreak is possible next week. Nothing is confirmed until a jailbreak is released though so you'll need to remain patient.

Downgrade from iOS 8.4 to iOS 8.3

If you download iOS 8.4 on day one and you don't like it, remember, you'll be able to drop back down to iOS 8.3. You will not, however, be able to drop down to anything lower than that so be careful if you're moving from something like iOS 8.2, iOS 8.0 or iOS 7.

    iOS 8.4 Release Time

Apple hasn't released an iOS 8.4 release time but thanks to many years of dealing with unannounced iOS release times and release dates, we have a pretty solid read on what will transpire on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

    U.S.

The only time that Apple doesn't release an iOS update between 9AM PST and 10:30AMPST is when it releases an update after an event. Every other release sticks to a specific protocol.

If you live in the United States, there are some specific times that you should be checking for iOS 8.4. The iOS 8.4 release time should pan out as follows in the U.S.:

  • Eastern – 1 PM
  • Central – 12 PM
  • Mountain – 11 AM
  • Pacific – 9 – 10AM
  • Other Countries

While the iOS 8.4 release time will be reasonable in the United States, iPhone and iPad users in other parts of the world probably won't be so lucky. Here's how the iOS 8.4 release time will probably play out in other parts of the world:

  • London – 6 PM
  • Moscow – 9 PM
  • New Dehli – 10:30 PM
  • Shanghai – 1 AM
  • Tokyo – 2 AM
  • Melbourne – 3 AM
  • Auckland – 5 AM
  • Apple doesn't announce anything beforehand so you'll need to keep an eye out for the start of its iOS 8.4 roll out.

    File Size & Installation

We don't know the exact iOS 8.4 file size though we expect it to be larger than your average bug fix update due to the features on board. And thanks to some of the changes Apple's made to how iOS updates install Over-the-Air, you shouldn't need a lot of open storage space on board your phone or tablet in order to install through settings.

Neos Therapeutics Presents Data On ADHD Therapy At ASCP Annual Meeting

Texas-based Neos Therapeutics, Inc., a pharmaceutical firm with 3 late-stage innovative, extended-release (XR) product candidates to address attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), recently presented at the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology's Annual Meeting (ASCP) in Miami, Florida. Data from 2 clinical trials on Cotempla XR-ODT™ (formerly NT-0102), a methylphenidate XR orally-disintegrating tablet (ODT) drug candidate, along with the company's amphetamine XR-ODT drug candidate, were presented confirming that both substances have a concentration-time profile for a daily dose that maintains its properties even in the presence of high fat meals and alcohol.

"These studies offer valuable insights into Neos' two extended-release orally disintegrating tablet drug candidates for ADHD, and demonstrate a pharmacokinetic profile similar to a marketed capsule product. The breadth of XR-ODT candidate data presented at ASCP reinforce that these formulations appear to provide a pharmacokinetic profile consistent with once daily dosing, maintain their extended-release properties in the presence of a high-fat meal and alcohol and are generally well-tolerated," noted Ann Childress from the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

About 54 percent of pediatric patients and 40 percent of adult patients in the general population have trouble swallowing capsules and tablets, which might result in skipping doses or in patients discontinuing treatment. Both Cotempla XR-ODT™ and NT-0202 disintegrate in the mouth and there is no need for water and only needs to be taken once per day.

"We are pleased that the results of the studies presented at ASCP suggest that Cotempla XR-ODT™ can be dosed with or without food and has a similar pharmacokinetic profile to a marketed methylphenidate capsule product. We are also encouraged to see that the modified-release properties of NT-0202 are maintained in the presence of alcohol. We believe that this is the first public presentation of data from a study on the effects of alcohol on the PK parameters of an extended-release amphetamine formulation," said Vipin K. Garg, Neos Therapeutics' president.

Neos announced submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) for Cotempla to the FDA and if approved, this will be the first methylphenidate extended-release orally disintegrating tablet to address ADHD.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The most severe form of ASD is autistic disorder (also known as autism or classical ASD). Other conditions along the autism spectrum disorder may include milder forms of Asperger's syndrome, as well as childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified. Males are four times more likely to have an ASD than females, but the disorder occurs in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and affects every age group, although it varies in character and severity from one individual to another. It's estimated that 1 out of 88 children age 8 will have an autism spectrum disorder.

When can we expect the best tablet deals this year?

You're not imagining things: the well of tablet deals has been a little dry so far in 2015. Not only are we seeing fewer tablet deals than in previous years, but we're also seeing fewer Editors' Choice-worthy tablets. To find out when the deals will come back, we dug through the DealNews archives and spoke to an industry expert.

So before we talk about the future of tablets, let's get a grasp on the past.

2014 Was an Incredible Year for Tablet Deals

We saw 26% more tablet deals in 2014 than we did in 2013. When you break down the data into individual tablet categories, 2014's numbers get even more impressive. For instance, we saw a 127% increase in the number of Windows tablet deals between 2013 and 2014. That's a massive jump, especially when you consider the fact that DealNews doesn't list every tablet sale or discount — we only list items that are notable price lows, with the very best offers earning our Editors' Choice seal.

How does 2015 measure up so far? Not well. To date, we've seen fewer tablet deals overall in 2015 than in any year since 2012. You're also less likely to score an Editors' Choice deal. By this time in 2014, 35% of the Android tablet deals were hot enough to be marked Editors' Choice; compare that to only 28% so far in 2015. The difference is even worse when it comes to Windows tabs and iPads, where deals have dropped by 32% in 2015 compared to 2014.

    Tablet Industry Growing Pains

Don't mistake the current dearth of deals for the tablet's death knell, though; industry insiders see a growing interest in these slates. CEA Senior Manager of Industry Analysis Chris Ely spoke with DealNews about the results of a recent CEA study. Among the study's findings was that tablets have finally broken into the top 10 most commonly owned consumer electronics products.

"Household ownership of tablets increased. Fifty-four percent of U.S. households reported that they own at least one tablet, and that's up f rom 45% in 2014," Ely said. "And also tablets are becoming more dense. Many households are actually buying more tablets. This year there's 1.8 tablets per household on average; last year it was 1.6."

To put these numbers into perspective, Ely explained that in April 2011, only 8% of U.S. households reported owning a tablet, compared to the current 54%. "It took smartphones almost six years to reach a household penetration rate above 50%, where it took tablets four years," Ely said. "We're not necessarily seeing anything that suggests a slow down."

When Will the Tablet Deals Come Back?

It's worth noting that, while the total number of tablet deals is down for 2015, we've actually seen about 8% more iPad discounts so far than we had at this time in 2014. Admittedly, this slight uptick in iPads hasn't come with a corresponding increase in Editors' Choice nods (again, those are down by 32%), but iPads are the only tablet category that's beaten 2014 numbers at all. In Octobe r, we can reasonably expect Apple to announce a new iPad generation, which will lead to even more iPad price drops on older models. Therefore, Apple fans should save their pennies for the fall.

Windows tablets don't have quite the same outlook as iPads, unfortunately. These slates saw astoundingly low prices in 2014, setting records that are tough to beat. That said, rumors are circulating that the Surface Pro 4 could launch as soon as July. If this is the case, we can expect a dramatic increase in offers for previous-gen Surfaces over the summer. Even without a new Surface, the upcoming release of Windows 10 could fuel several tie-in tablet sales.

Lacking a single flagship model to steer prices for the whole category, Android tablet trends are harder to pin down. We know we're in a significant slump, as 2015 so far has seen about 45% fewer Android tablet offers compared to the same period in 2014. An Android fan's best bet is to wait for Black Friday and the holida y season; we consistently see crazy price lows on Androids during these shopping holidays.

Our current tablet deal slump is a not-so-fun reminder of the cyclical nature of prices. But if you missed out on 2014's amazing offers, you don't have to settle for paying more. Now is the time to be patient, because better tablet deals are just around the corner!

Will the next Samsung Galaxy Tab S be able to take down Apple's iPad Air 2?

While Samsung has not yet officially announced the Galaxy Tab S' successor, rumors are already circulating that a powerful tablet would come out soon. It is primarily because all three gadgets have very similar sizes and available on Wi-Fi only and cellular variants.

What else do we know about the new Samsung tablet?

Aside from the two choices (Wi-Fi only and cellular), the new Samsung tablet is also said to come out in two sizes -- 8-inches and 9.7-inches. These new sizes are smaller than the current Galaxy Tab S sizes -- 8.4-inches and 10.5-inches.

Earlier, On Leaks revealed some details about the design and dimensions of the upcoming device.

Leaked images previously found by Sam Mobile showed that the device would get a 4:3 aspect ratio display. Plus, it would be using Super AMOLED display with a pixel resolution of 2048x1536. The new tablet would also be getting an Exynos 5433 processor, a 3GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel main camera, and a 2 megapixel front camera. Also expect an LTE connectivity feature and Android 5.0 Lollipop software in the new device. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is also said to come with a 16 GB of storage and a microSD slot.

Sam Mobile earlier said in its previous report that the new high-end tablet Galaxy Tab S2 would be arriving in June. Another report from Sam Mobile reportedly confirmed the arrival of the new device. "The changelog claims that the newest version of the app now supports the Galaxy Tab S2 along with the Galaxy Tab A, thereby confirming the existence of the yet unreleased Galaxy Tab S2," the Sam Mobile report said.

On the other hand, the iPad Air 2 has a 2048-by-1536-pixel resolution, iOS 8, and an A8X chip. It has a height of 9.4 inches, width of 6.6 inches, depth of 0.24 inches, and weight of 0.96 pounds. It has an 8 megapixel iSight camera and a 1.2 megapixel FaceTime HD camera. It is available in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB memory capacities.

Amazon launches Android Lollipop-based Fire OS 5 for developer preview

    Adam Westlake

Amazon devices such as the Fire phone and Fire HD tablets may finally be getting Android Lollipop in the near future, or rather, the Fire OS-skinned version of Lollipop. While most flagship Android devices have had the option to install Lollipop for many months now, Amazon's Fire OS is currently still based on Android version 4.4. This may be hardly noticeable to users, as Fire OS is actually much more than a simple re-skin of Android.

Either way, the Lollipop-based Fire OS version 5 is on its way, and now developers can get their hands on it. A developer preview edition is now available for download from Amazon's site. The main purpose of the software is let developers test how their app will run on a Fire HD 6 and 7 tablet with Fire OS 5. There's no firm release date at this point, but Amazon says it will be ready sometime later this year.

The company has also made it easier for app developers to test their creations through its Developer Portal homepage. This lets them skip the downloading and installing of Fire OS 5 onto a device, and instead tell them if their apps will be compatible or not.

Should you need a new Fire device to test on, or if you're new to developing for Fire OS, Amazon is also offering a promotion that has $50 off the Fire HD 7 tablet, with a purchase limit of two.

iPad Pro Could Be Ideal Educational Device

The iPad Pro has been a long expected device release from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), and rumored features included in the tablet suggests that it will be an ideal educational device. Reports indicate that Apple will particularly concentrate development with the iPad Pro in producing a device that has obvious productivity improvements, and this would also appeal to higher education affiliates in particular.

    iPad Pro

    iPad Pro - Display size

Since the iPad Pro was first floated as a concept, it has been assumed that a central aspect of this tablet will be a significantly increased display size. A 13-inch tablet is expected when the iPad Pro is finally unveiled, and this would be ideal for educational usage. Engaging in academic work with a 10-inch screen is certainly plausible, but it tends to become a little tiring after a period of extended usage. An increased amount of screen real estate can equate to a more comfortable user experience, ensuring that the iPad Pro is on the shopping list of many students in particular.

    Keyboard attachments

Another report regarding the iPad Pro suggests that the device will feature considerably improved support for keyboard attachments. It is suggested that Apple wants to significantly improve this element of the iPad with the iPad Pro release, with a view to the tablet being considered a more serious form of computer. This would also be very much in line with a productivity-oriented iPad Pro, and would fit into an ethos that particularly suited students as well.

    Specialist stylus

Another aspect of the iPad Pro which is rumored, and which would which also fit in with this educational aim, is the inclusion of a stylus. The S-Pen offered in the Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) Galaxy Note range has proved particularly popular, and it is rumored that Apple is working on producing a similar external device that would offer handwriting functionality to students as well as industrial settings.

As students increasingly move to digital textbooks, the ability to highlight, annotate, underline, write in margins, and use other strategies in order to separate particular sections of text, remains important. This technique is often referred to as active reading, and it is an important research and revision strategy utilised by the majority of students. If the iPad Pro intends to appeal to educational users, it must utilize a sophisticated system to deliver this, and consequently the predictive stylus could fit into this overall aim.

While it has been possible to purchase external stylus devices for the iPad range previously, it is believed that Apple is working on producing something extremely sophisticated and revolutionary in order to take the iPad Pro to the next level. An active digitizer has also been suggested in order to aid the active reading process, and with the iPad Pro fitted with all of these individual elements, it would instantly become a very useful device for students when it is released.

At the time of writing, the iPad Pro remains very much a rumored device. Alternatively, it could be looked upon as an extremely poorly kept secret, as the relentlessness of reports on this forthcoming tablet would seem to suggest that it is an inevitability. Apple kept extremely quiet on the subject of an Apple Watch for many years, but the tech community predicted it long before it finally appeared, and thus this would seem to be a likelihood with the iPad Pro as well.

    iOS 9 iPad Pro

    Competing with Surface Pro

If Apple does release a device which is particularly focused on educational needs then it will be competing directly with the already released Surface Pro. This Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) device is extremely well aligned to the needs of the students, but the pricetag in excess of $1,000 can be prohibitive for the less well-heeled academic. If Apple could produce a tablet that is considerably more affordable than this Microsoft offering, while delivering similar functionality and specifications, then it could attract a significant number of users from this important niche. It has certainly been asserted in some quarters that the Surface Pro fails to acknowledge the economic realities of the contemporary student and educational establishment.

    Multitasking and iOS 9 clues

Another aspect of the iPad Pro which could be particularly useful for students is the expected split-screen multitasking. This would seem to be almost a certainty, as the ability for future tablets to achieve this has already been included in the coding for the mobile operating system iOS 9.

The iOS 9 release has also given clues about keyboard-related functionality, as the iOS 9 beta version has already been discovered to include code which provides provisions for a larger iPad keyboard. Naturally this has already been strongly linked with a future iPad Pro device.

As Apple continues to expand its commercial operation, an iPad Pro that attracts the average student would be a real asset to the corporation.

Children Will Learn Faster on iPads & Tablets Than With Books, Study Says

The latest research done by experts in the University of London are debunking claims that suggests early exposure to gadgets, such as the iPad, in very young children may be disadvantageous. Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith, the head of the research, said in interview with Sunday Times that babies could actually benefit from tablet computers and must be given access to this "from birth."

    Like Us on Facebook

"It is shocking how fast they learn, even faster than adults to do things like scroll up and down text," said the professor. "Books are static. When you observe babies with books, all they are interested in is the sound of the pages turning. Their visual system at that age is attracted by movement."

The study observed a small group of babies between the ages of six to 10 months and found out they could identify numbers better when showed on the tablet. "Everything we know about child development tells us that tablet computers should not be banned for babies and toddlers," Karmiloff-Smith further claimed.

Last year, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine made recommendations to parents about delaying the use of gadgets on young children as it can be "detrimental to the social-emotional development of the child," as reported on Washington Post.

The experts from this study said that the scenario is similar to exposing kids to television and videos, only mobile gadgets make the situation worse. The children, therefore, must benefit more from having real-life interactions. "If these devices become the predominant method to calm and distract young children, will they be able to develop their own internal mechanisms of self-regulation?" the study, which was published in Eureka Alert, hypothesizes.

Professor Karmiloff-Smith and her team, however, remain convinced they are onto something. To further prove their findings, the experts are now studying over a hundred babies and toddlers. One group is given access to the gadgets, while the other group has none, according to Daily Mail.

They may find an ally in Jordy Kaufman, who runs BabyLab in the University of Melbourne, which studies the effects of technology among children below five years old. "When scientists and pediatrician advocacy groups have talked about the danger of screen time for kids, they are lumping together all types of screen use. But most of the research is on TV. It seems misguided to assume that iPad apps are going to have the same effect. It all depends what you are using it for," Kaufman said via The Guardian.

Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet release postponed due to Xperia Z4 phone overheating in Japan as both run on Snapdragon 810

After Japanese users began complaining about Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4 overheating, the launch of the Xperia Z4 Tablet has now been postponed as both the devices are powered by Qualcomm's beleaguered Snapdragon processor, which is reportedly causing the overheating issues.

    Reuters

Sony had announced the top of the line Xperia Z4 Android Tablet at the MWC 2015 in March this year and was originally scheduled to become available by the end of May in the UK, and arrive in the US as well as other key markets later. UK buyers have already pre-ordered the tablet and were promised that the Xperia Z4 Tabletwould be delivered in early June, which was pushed forward to mid-June. But now, Sony Mobile's regional online stores in the UK have listed June 29 as the date when deliveries are "expected" to begin.

Except for the Nexus 9, the upper tier, premium, feature-packed Sony Xperia Z4 Android Tablet has no competition in the high-profile high-end Android tablet market, which is saturated by low to mid selections. Samsung's super thin Galaxy Tab S2 is not expected to arrive until September, which would have given the Xperia Z4 Tablet a good headstart in the market. This makes the reason behind the continued delay in the release of Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet quite a mystery, though it is now being suspected that the latest complaints by Japanese users of the Xperia Z4 smartphone overheating could be the problem.

Both the Xperia Z4 smartphone and Xperia Z4 Tablet are powered by Qualcomm's 64-bit octacore Snapdragon 810 processor, which has recently been in the news for overheating. The Xperia Z4 smartphone, which was recently launched exclusively for Japan, became available for purchase this week with the country's mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo. However, Japanese users of the Xperia Z4 smartphone have already taken to Twitter and other online platforms to vent their frustration over their handsets heating up. In fact, NTT DoCoMo has received so many overheating complaints of the Xperia Z4 smartphone that it has slapped a warning label on the device, advising users to take precautions.

Sony is yet to officially acknowledge the overheating issue in the Xperia Z4 smartphone, though user complaints and NTT DOCOMO's official acknowledgement of the problem may have forced the company to hold back shipments of the Xperia Z4 Tablet until the problem is resolved.

iOS 9 Reveals iPad Pro And iPhone 7 Details

The big announcement during the WWDC keynote was the release of iOS 9, and now this mobile operating system has given us clues to future Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) hardware devices. The WWDC show has become a little more low-key over the years, as Apple has instead chosen to make its major hardware announcements at specialist events. But as developers get to grips with the code of the new iOS 9 release, it appears that there are elements within it that offer very significant clues about future Apple products.

    iOS 9 jailbreak

iOS 9 - multitasking and the iPad Pro

Of all the known features of iOS 9, the simultaneous multitasking that is possible through the software would obviously be compatible with an iPad Pro design. This extremely high spec tablet has been predicted for some time, although Apple has remained predictiably taciturn on the subject. But during its keynote presentation at the San Francisco conference, Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering at Apple, showcased the abilities of this new mobile operating system to run applications side-by-side. This would obviously favor the high-end tablet that has been extremely long awaited.

Simultaneous multitasking was introduced in Windows 7, and the implementation of this feature in iOS 9 is extremely similar to this Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) innovation. Users can drag applications to the edge of iPhone or iPad screen, and also run apps parallel to one another. Federighi demonstrated that the Photos app can be opened on one side of a device, while the Messages app runs in a smaller pane on the right side of the display.

This will save time and effort for users of Apple devices, and it will be introduced in the existing Apple range in the coming weeks. However, it would make even more sense for the poorly kept secret which is the iPad Pro. This tablet has long been expected to debut with a 13-inch display, providing tablet fans with a huge amount of screen space in order to view content. Indeed, the iPad Pro is potentially over 30 percent larger than the iPad Air display, and getting on for twice as large as the iPad Mini 3.

    Keyboard support

Another feature that Apple announced as being part of the iOS 9 makeup is superior support for hardware keyboards. With the existing iPad and iPad Mini models, third-party cables are already available from a range of technology manufacturers. But a superior hardware keyboard for the iPad Pro would help transform the tablet into a serious computer, something that could then be utilized for tasks at corporate work, as well as just the sort of casual usage which is associated with tablets.

This could incentivize Apple to manufacture a dedicated keyboard for the iPad Pro, which would enable this hotly anticipated tablet to compete in the hybrid space alongside existing devices such as the Lenovo Group Limited (ADR) (OTCMKTS:LNVGY) (HKG:0992) ThinkPad 10, Microsoft Surface 3, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and ASUSTEK Computer Inc. (TPE:2357) (OTCMKTS:AKCPF) Transformer Book T100HA. The iPad is already seen as a high-class content creation tool, but such a relatively simple addition as a quality keyboard could greatly enhance this reputation.

Not only would this be an attractive characteristic for fans of the iPad series, but it would also make commercial sense for Apple. The release of the iPhone 6 Plus phablet has tended to eat into the profits of the iPad range, and providing features which mark it out as qualitatively different from the popular iPhone 6 Plus would obviously be in Apple's interests.

    Force Touch

The iPad Pro would also be a natural companion for the Force Touch functionality. This first came to the Apple stable when the Apple Watch was released, and is expected to become an increasingly important part of Apple devices in the future. It was particularly noticeable that Apple made no mention of iOS 9 supporting either Bluetooth mouses or trackpads, so it is possible that the corporation has Force Touch functionality in mind to operate this new tablet.

It certainly sounds as if based on the information that we have from Apple so far that there would be no trackball included with the iPad Pro, which would suggest that it could be operated differently to existing tablet devices.

    iPhone 7 and camera specs

Code buried deep in the iOS 9 operating system also suggested that the next iPhone could provide a front-facing flash. Previously such features have been limited to rear-facing cameras in the iPhone series, with the front-facing units typically of a relatively low quality. However, some diligent snooping carried out by Apple developers has located a sector of code that will apparently enable people to take selfies in the dark in the future.

Aside from this ability, the same sector of code within iOS 9 also suggests that the phone will benefit from a significant upgrade to video capturing capabilities. It seems probable based on this information that the iPhone 7 will have a 1080p camera, and the 720p video capturing capabilities of the smartphone will increase to 240 frames per second. With support for panoramic selfies and slow motion video also implied, it is clear from the barebones of iOS 9 that Apple intends to significantly improve the front-facing camera in the device.

It has been a goal of Apple for some time to improve the rear-facing camera in the iPhone, with the consumer electronics giant recently promoting this in a series of commercials. It also seems that there will be something of a battle in the rear-camera department in this next generation of smartphones, as Samsung has also been linked with producing an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera when it releases the Galaxy Note 5 this year.

As developers continue to dig around in this significant mobile operating system, we'll probably gain more insight into what can be expected from future Apple devices. For the time being, fans of Apple and the iPad and iPhone series at least have some notion of what we can expect from forthcoming critical device releases.

    Tablets and Quality Control Testing

Tablets are just one of the many dosage forms that can be manufactured for pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements. For supplements, manufacturers follow the cGMPs (current good manufacturing practices) noted in CFR 21 part 111. These regulations require established specifications to ensure quality products are manufactured, and many different tests can be run to confirm the quality of tableted products.

The testing specifications established for tablets include physical, chemical and biological tests. Physical testing specifications can comprise of size, shape, color, friability, breaking force or hardness, and disintegration. Inspecting the appearance of a tablet can be a quick quality check. Specifications can also be set for organoleptic type testing that encompasses color, odor, texture and even taste, in some cases. These sensory tests are performed by trained analysts that rely on their interpretation for results. Color charts, tablet size and shape charts, and texture, odor and taste descriptions can be established to guide analysts in completing these types of tests. These types of physical tests can be established as final release specifications in addition to the in-process quality checks that ensure consistency of the production run. In chewable tablets, for instance, a quick taste or odor check can ensure the proper flavoring is blended. It would be a costly mistake t o find that a chewable fruit vitamin tastes and smells like mint at the end of the run. These visual and sensory tests are an important first step in the quality control process.

Test methods used for dietary supplement products are commonly found in the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), Food Chemical Codex, European Pharmacopeia, AOAC and other peer-review journals. Testing for tablets have a variety of specific methods listed in these publications. Tablets must be manufactured to stay intact during production, packaging, labeling, transportation and, finally, in the consumer's possession. These extensive handling conditions should be tested to verify that the tablets will withstand these stresses.

Tablet friability testing <1216>, listed in the USP, measures the way tablets hold up under tumbling conditions. The stress of tumbling and resistance of chipping and abrasion is measured by the weight loss of the tablets, after testing. A weight loss of 1 percent or less is usually acceptable. This apparatus and operation is clearly defined in the USP and provides a good quality check for tablet durability. This testing is an excellent in-process check to monitor the consistency of the tablets in the production run.

USP Tablet Breaking Force <1217> is commonly referred to as hardness testing. This test uses two plates to exert pressure on the edges of the tablet with force pressing toward the center of the tablet. The movement of the plates and the rate at which the compression force is applied must be consistent. This test works to measure the breaking, not the crushing, of the tablet. Consistency and repeating the test under the same conditions for each tablet in the same production run is very important. While the breaking force test only accounts for cylindrical shapes, calculations of tensile strength can be used to account for other geometric tablet shapes. Detailed explanations and calculations are all listed in the USP for this method.

USP Disintegration <701> can be used to measure the time it takes for tablets or capsules to dissolve. There should be specifications if tablets or capsules are uncoated, coated, delay-release, rapid-release, hard gel, soft gels or other forms. The disintegration testing uses a cylinder with six tubes immersed in a liquid solution at 35 to 39 degrees Celsius. This cylinder is suspended from an arm that raises and lowers it into liquid at a constant frequency rate. This test simulates digestion in the stomach or small intestine, and measures the time it takes for the tablet or capsule to dissolve.

While this is a good representation of the physical testing specifications that can be established, there are also many chemical tests that can be performed on tableted products. USP <711> Dissolution Testing measures a chemical marker release of the dissolving tablet or capsule at given time intervals. This testing can be used for immediate-release, extended-release or delayed-release of enteric-coated and non-coated tablets or capsules. Specific monographs give the exact method for the testing but, in general, Dissolution Testing is performed using a 37-degrees-Celsius simulated stomach or gastric solution. Depending on the required chemical marker release time, one or more of the solution samples will be taken for testing. This chemical marker test shows the amount of active ingredient at the specified time interval. Charted data points would be used to show the chemical release of the product over the specified time. This information can be used to determine the release curve of a time-released product. It might show a 10 percent release in 30 minutes; 50 percent release in 45 minutes; and full release by 60 minutes. This information will be used to ensure that the required specifications for the product are met.

The combination of product testing specifications varies widely depending on the product. Testing should be considered and completed throughout the manufacturing process. This begins with testing raw materials and continues with in-process testing, along with final release testing. It is important to consider all the requirements of GMPs and keep a keen eye on quality. Monitoring manufacturing processes will ensure that consumers receive safe products.
