Back when the Surface 3 was officially introduced to the market Microsoft informed us that an LTE model will be on its way for a later release too. Several months have passed since and the Surface 3 LTE is still nowhere to be found. It continues to be listed in Microsoft's online store but no concrete launch dates have been revealed so far.
Fortunately though, it looks like the Surface 3 LTE might be closing in to an imminent market debut, as the tablet was recently spotted in the database of the Global Certification Forum. This signalizes that Microsoft is almost ready to push the device on the market, and will probably do so once these formalities will be dealt with.
The LTE-enabled Surface 3 seems to have been certified on the 26th of June, so technically speaking we shouldn't have to wait much longer before Microsoft will give us the option of actually buying one.
The model is listed under the name of "Surface 3 LTE" and much like the name suggests, there's really not much to say regarding the slate's internals aside from the addition of LTE radios. The slate will be offered with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and prospective customers will also be able to pick a beefier model equipped with 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD.
Aside from these characteristics the Surface 3 LTE has the same hardware internals as the Wi-Fi-only model. This includes a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom x7-Z8700 quad-core processor with frequencies of up to 2.4 GHz in Intel Burst technology, a 10.8-inch ClearType display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 x 1280, an 8 MP primary camera along with a 3.5 MP front-facing sensor, and a battery that managed to deliver 5.45 hours of video playback in our own tests.
As yet we do not know how much the Surface 3 LTE will cost, but our guess is that it should have a price tag higher by about $100 over the Wi-Fi model. Whether or not it's worth it is a different story for another time, one which will be told once the slate hits the shelves.
