New 2017 iPad Review: Apple Offers a Budget Tablet

Apple's new 9.7-inch 2017 iPad doesn't come with a lot of surprises except for one, the $329 price tag Apple gave the 32GB model. It now competes with other budget tablets including the company's own iPad mini 4, their former low-price option. Potential buyers may want to know if this new 2017 iPad offers enough reasons to upgrade from their present iPad or switch from another company's tablet. We'll let readers know in our review of the new low-cost iPad.

new 2017 ipad

Apple and other retailers sell the iPad in two storage sizes, 32GB for $329 and 128GB for $429. That gets the buyer a Wi-Fi only model. Add Cellular for an extra $130 making them $459 for 32GB and $559 for 128GB. You can also add Apple Care for $99, which delivers premium support and an extra year to the warranty life.

Apple sells the new 2017 iPad in three colors, Space Gray, Silver and Gold.

2017 iPad: Hardware Design

The hardware design of the new 9.7-inch 2017 iPad looks almost exactly like the rest of the iPads Apple sells or sold earlier. It's got the same rounded corners, brushed aluminum edges that bring the front glass display together with the aluminum back and the same rounded edges.

Along the top right we get the power button and on the top right we find the volume up and down buttons.

new 2017 ipad top edge

Apple didn't remove the 3.5mm stereo headphone/mic combo port like they did on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. It's still there on the top edge on the left.

The left edge doesn't show us much, but Apple placed their magnets there to connect to the Apple Smart Cover and other covers.

new 2017 ipad bottom edge

The bottom edge of the new 2017 iPad has the speakers and a Lightning port between them.

Why doesn't Apple change their iPad design more drastically from model to model? First, why mess with something that works? People like the thin slab of glass and metal design because it works well, Apple makes them to last and it helps users view content and attach accessories in a useful way.

2017 iPad: Performance and Battery Life

new 2017 ipad home button

The new 2017 iPad comes it at only $329 and it's budget price shows somewhat. Pressing the home button to unlock takes a second or two longer than my iPad Pro or iPhone 7 Plus. Apps usually launch instantly, but after a little use, the iPad does launch them noticeably slower. However, it's not enough that the average user will mind. In fact, if I wasn't looking for a speed difference while launching apps and unlocking my iPad next to my other iOS devices, then I might not have noticed.

new 2017 ipad back

The graphics chip and CPU built into the new 2017 iPad run slower than the iPad Pro and iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7 bests the 2017 iPad's A9 as does the M10 over the M9 for graphics processing. In real world, that means the new iPad's not the top choice for gaming and design, but it will still play casual games and in my experience works well for most common tasks.

The battery of the new 2017 iPad compares favorably to the other iPads. Apple promises 9-10 hours depending on what you're doing. That's pretty accurate in real-world experience.

Despite the low price, the new iPad isn't a slouch in terms of power and battery life. Most users will enjoy using it, but the power user might want the iPad Pro instead.

2017 iPad: Camera

new 2017 ipad camera and volume buttons

Apple put an 8MP camera on the back of the new 2017 iPad and it enjoys many of the same features seen in iPhone cameras. You can use it to take Live Photos, panorama photos, HDR images, burst mode, timer mode photos and videos. It shoots 1080P video at 30fps, 120fps Slo-mo video and time-lapse video with image stabilization.

facetime camera app new 2017 ipad

The FaceTime Camera on the new 2017 iPad takes decent shots and excels at FaceTime video chat.

On the front, there's a 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera that's capable of Life Photos, 720P video and burst mode as well. Strangely, the front facing camera has a better aperture of f/2.2 compared to f/2.4 for the back camera. Aperture gives the user better low-light photos and narrower depth of field which blurs out the background.

animated gif of a live photo

Live Photos are fun. I created the above animated GIF of a Live Photo using the iOS app LivePix ($1.99).

The camera doesn't give users the Portrait mode we enjoy in the iPhone 7 camera. In spite of that, the camera app on the iPad works a lot like the iPhone camera app. You can switch from the front to back easily.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On the left, you'll see the digital zoom control. Digital zoom isn't recommended since it blows up the size of the pixels instead of moving the lens like a traditional DSLR or Point-and-shoot photo camera zoom lens. You'll get softer focus like the photo in the gallery above. The gallery above has two images, one with zoom and one using normal zoom without digital zoom.

new 2017 ipad camera app options

On the right side of the Camera app screen (seen above), we see the controls to turn on or off features like Live Photos, HDR or the Timer. They're on the top right above the shutter release button. Immediately above the shutter release below these buttons, you'll find the toggle to switch from the front to back camera.

sample hdr shot

This HDR version of the photo shows color in the sky.

Below the shutter button, there's another button that opens the Photo gallery. View your photos and edit them. Next, you get the camera mode options starting with Time-lapse, Slo-mo, Video, Photo, Square (takes a square photo instead of a wide or tall shot) and Pano (stitches together multiple shots to make a very wide-angle shot.

sample non-hdr shot

This normal shot without HDR shows how the sky gets blown out without the HDR setting turned on.

The HDR setting does a great job of adding color where it would normally show none. The two sample shots above of my house show one with plenty of color in the blue sky while the non-HDR shot shows just white because it's blown out because the sky is too bright.

Notice how the above sample of the Pano shot didn't get the exposure right on the last section of the scene at the right side of the shot. Below you'll see what the Camera app looks like while taking a Pano shot.

2017 ipad camera app pano setting

A screenshot of the Pano setting in the new 2017 iPad Camera app.

A few years ago people would die for a camera this good on their phone or tablet. Today, it's clearly a step down from the great cameras we get on phones like the iPhone. The new Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 come with incredible cameras, too.

The iPad camera is great for snap shots and scanning things like documents, photos, the white board in a class or meeting room and receipts. You can take nice photos in regular light. Find a few samples below.

2017 iPad: Display and Sound

new 2017 ipad display

Apple put their beautiful 9.7-inch Retina display in the new iPad with a resolution of 2048 x 1536, or 264 pixels per inch. It's a color accurate display that also looks great while reading text, editing photos and watching movies or TV shows. We get a bright display with good color.

new 2017 ipad speaker

Apple skimped on sound in the new 2017 iPad. The stereo speakers flank the Lightning connector along the bottom edge of the iPad. They're muddled and weak. You can use them to listen to audio books, podcasts and other spoken word content. They're fine for a quick YouTube or Facebook video, but you'll want a pair of earbuds or the Apple AirPods if you plan to listen to music or watch movies and want great sound.

2017 iPad: Software

ios 10.3 on new 2017 ipad

The latest version of iOS looks just like the earlier versions. In other words, the design of the operating system desperately needs an update. iOS 10 feels old and out of date. The grid of icons matches the smaller screen iPhone, which makes no sense. Why not narrow the distance between icon rows and columns so users can fit more icons on the screen instead of the 5 x 4 grid in landscape mode? Even the iPhone 7 Plus fits six icons across in landscape mode, but that's because it has a wider aspect ratio.

Also, static icons are boring. Why not let users place live widgets on the home screen? The force touch available on the iPhone helps, but we don't get that on the iPad. We still have to pull down from the top of the screen to show the notification area and use widgets in iOS. There's also the Control Center, which the user drags up from the bottom to show. The only customization we get comes from adding app widgets to the notification area and some settings for when the user can use the Control Center.

control center on new ipad

In case people think I'm only complaining because iOS doesn't act more like Android, realize that I'm a iPad user since 1.0. I've owned many Android tablets, but none of them satisfied me like the iPad.

2017 iPad: Bottom Line

The new 2017 iPad didn't get a big overhaul because it seems Apple set a brand new goal: to lower the price so that this iPad would appeal to schools. Google dominates the education market with their affordable and simple Chromebooks mostly due to price and simplicity. When you consider the price reduction, the new 2017 iPad makes for a great tablet for schools and others.

Even though the $329 2017 iPad comes with a couple of compromises, it's still the best budget tablet in the 10-inch range. The iPad Pro wins the prize for high-end tablets, but none of the other comparably-priced tablets come close to it for the following reasons. First, it has the best hardware design and quality. It's a beautiful tablet with a great screen, performance and nice battery life.

Second, iOS 10 is still a simple and easy to learn operating system. Sure, Apple needs to add some features that we enjoy on Android and even Windows Phone like active tiles or icons on the home screen and better customization. However, Apple kept iOS the same for all these years because it's simple to use. People can pick up an iPad and become productive without a lot of education or training.

Finally, the screen look great. Samsung's Galaxy Tab S3 delivers better color, but not better text display. It's not worse than the iPad, but it's not better. The iPad starts at a lower price than the S3, too.

If you're looking for a new tablet, then you should give the iPad a lot of consideration. Don't replace your iPad Air with one. If you have an iPad older than that, you will want to look into upgrading. It doesn't work with the Apple Pencil or Smart Cover, both designed only for the iPad Pro. However, you can find a wealth of great accessories to use with the 2017 iPad thanks to iPad line's popularity.

Hacker threatens to release stolen copies of Netflix series

This Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, file photo, shows Netflix on a tablet, in North Andover, Mass. A hacker claims to have stolen the upcoming season of Netflix's hit series "Orange Is The New Black," and is demanding that the video streaming service pay an unspecified ransom to prevent all the new episodes from being prematurely released online. (AP/Elise Amendola)

A hacker claims to have stolen the upcoming season of Netflix's hit series "Orange Is The New Black," and is demanding that the video streaming service pay an unspecified ransom to prevent all the new episodes from being prematurely released online.

The hacker, operating under the name The Dark Overlord, has already purportedly uploaded the first episode to an illegal file-sharing service. The Associated Press could not legally confirm the authenticity of that uploaded file.

New episodes of "Orange" are scheduled for official release on June 9.

Netflix said that a small production vendor that works with several major TV studios had suffered a breach. The Los Gatos, California, company described it as an "active situation" that's being investigated by the FBI and other authorities.

Pirated copies of "Orange" could dent Netflix's subscriber growth and the company's stock price.

Read also: Netflix standing on the threshold of 100 million subscribers

In the ransom note, The Dark Overlord claimed to have stolen series from other studios, too, by breaking into a single company. The purported hacker promised to also release those titles unless "modest" ransoms are paid.

Rumors of a massive leak of Hollywood films and TV episodes have been circulating online for months, fed by purported screenshots of the footage and a copy of a proposed deal to delete the stolen material in return for tens of thousands of dollars in electronic currency.

When the AP contacted The Dark Overlord in February, the hacker said the purloined video wouldn't be made publicly available after all, making the far-fetched claim that "no one really (cares) about unreleased movies and TV show episodes."

It's not clear what triggered The Dark Overload's renewed ransom demands.

Netflix is counting on "Orange" to help it add 3.2 million subscribers from April through June. That's substantially higher than the company's average gain of 1.8 million subscribers in the same period over the past five years.

Whenever Netflix's quarterly subscriber gains fall shy of management's projections, the company's stock usually plunges.

US FDA approves Inspirion’s RoxyBond tablets for management of pain

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Inspirion Delivery Sciences' RoxyBond (oxycodone hydrochloride) tablets, for oral use, CII, indicated for the management of pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate.

RoxyBond is an abuse-deterrent formulation of oxycodone that uses physical and chemical barriers to deter abuse, without the use of aversive agents or opioid antagonists. RoxyBond is the first immediate-release opioid analgesic approved with labeling describing its abuse-deterrent properties, consistent with the FDA's 2015 Guidance for Industry: Abuse-Deterrent Opioids – Evaluation and Labeling. RoxyBond is approved in three dosage strengths: 5, 15, and 30mg.

RoxyBond, which uses Inspirion's SentryBond technology, is formulated with inactive ingredients that make the tablet more difficult to manipulate for misuse and abuse even if the tablet is subjected to physical ma nipulation and/or attempts at chemical extraction. Laboratory test data demonstrated that, relative to another approved oxycodone immediate-release tablet, RoxyBond has increased resistance to cutting, crushing, grinding, or breaking using selected tools. In addition, both intact and manipulated RoxyBond tablets resisted extraction in selected household and laboratory solvents under various conditions, including selected pre-treatments. Relative to oxycodone immediate-release tablets, the RoxyBond formulation forms a viscous material that resists passage through a needle; it was also more difficult to prepare solutions suitable for intravenous injection. The in vitro data demonstrate that RoxyBond has physicochemical properties expected to make abuse via injection difficult.  However, abuse by the intranasal, oral, and intravenous route is still possible

A clinical abuse potential study was also conducted. "As reflected in the prescribing information, the data from the clinic al study, along with support from in vitro data, also indicate that RoxyBond has physicochemical properties that are expected to reduce abuse by the intranasal route of administration," said Lynn R. Webster, MD, principal investigator, PRA Health Sciences, Salt Lake City, UT.

"RoxyBond represents the first and only immediate-release opioid approved by FDA with abuse-deterrent claims," said Jeffrey Gudin, MD, department director, Pain Management Center Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Gudin went on to say, "Oxycodone immediate release opioid tablets are widely abused and the development of RoxyBond will offer clinicians a new approach for treating patients in pain while also fighting against the potential for abuse."

"Inspirion is pleased to receive FDA approval for our second abuse deterrent product, RoxyBond, which is intended to address the long standing unmet need for immediate release abuse deterrent opioids.  There are nearly 18 million prescriptions for immediate release oxycodone hydrochloride annually in the US alone." said Stefan Aigner, MD, CFA, CEO of Inspirion.

On April 5, 2017, a joint meeting of the Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee and Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the US Food and Drug Administration voted 19 to 0 (with one abstention) to recommend approval of RoxyBond.

DJI release nice to haves at NAB 2017 Cendence Controller and Antenna Tracking

Social media was abuzz with hopes of the DJI Spark and or Phantom5 launch for NAB 2017 but many were disappointed that it's the posh Cendence controller and a tracking antenna.

I have heard it said that DJI flight controllers have toy-like simplicity. Personally, I think they are form and function distilled to where they should be.

A new trend is emerging in 2017, equipment snobbery. Folks are chucking the most money they can at equipment in the hope that the end product will be better. There is some point in that,  but the most expensive camera in the world in the hands of the worst photographer in the world will still be beaten by a cell phone.

The second reason people are upscaling their purchase is to set them apart from the competition. Only an amateur would turn up with a Phantom 4 Pro, look we have an Inspire 1 so must be better.

When I see these comments from business owners I immediately think they don't have a real plan and are winging it.

The Cendence controller will be one of these pieces of equipment candy. To be fair it does look like a useful upgrade if you know your way around a camera.  It also forces an upsell for Inspire 1 owners as it only works with the Inspire 2 and Matrice.

The new Cendence remote controller is DJI's first multi-platform controller for professionals whoneed versatility, efficiency and personalization at their fingertips. Its intuitive ergonomic design fits perfectly in your hands, allowing easy access to programmable function buttons and dials.

Users can program and store customised button configurations for the different flight and shooting options and can use two dials to adjust the pitch and yaw of the gimbal at the same time. With Cendence, pilots have instant access to functions like ISO, sharpness, shutter speed, focus and more, without navigating the touch menu settings on their mobile device. Cendence features built-in SDI and HDMI video transmission ports for live HD broadcast and streaming applications and can be easily adapted to use DJI's Lightbridge or WiFi video transmission technology.

The controller mounts smartphones, tablets and DJI's high-brightness CrystalSky monitors, and also features a smaller secondary screen to display critical telemetry data. Long battery life of up to 4 hours and the ability to easily exchange batteries make power management easier and longer flights possible. Cendence is compatible with DJI's Matrice 200 and Inspire 2 drones. Cendence will be available later this year, priced at $999 (USD).

The next one, antenna tracking. Well, it had to come. everybody else has been doing it for years.

DJI Tracktenna is a high-gain antenna that ushers in a new era of remote wireless communication by improving signal reliability over long distances and resisting interference. Its built-in sensors and two-axis gimbal automatically point the antenna to the aircraft at all times, bolstering the connection even while the operator is in motion or on a vehicle.

When installed on the new Cendence controller in optimal conditions, DJI Tracktenna can boost signal transmission to over 6.2 miles (10 km), giving professionals increased responsiveness and confidence when performing complex flights like search and rescue missions, power line inspections, pipeline inspections, live HD broadcasting, filmmaking and more. Pilots should always understand and follow any applicable laws and regulations regarding flight distance.

DJI Tracktenna supports transmission speeds of up to 10 Mbps within 1.24 miles (2 km) for data-intensive applications. It supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands, giving it greater signal stability. Pricing and availability for DJI Tracktenna will be announced at a later date.

There are brighter screens for TX's, that is just a natural thing. I am not sure these CrystalSky Android-based screens support third party apps for mapping and flight planning yet. Most people are still using separate devices because of that. You are trapped completely in the DJI way of thinking and their mapping app in particular is not upto scratch yet.

Lenovo Flex 11 Release date, Features and Price

  • SHARES
  • Although quietly, Chromebooks are slowly making room in the market. Not only are cheap laptops that use ChromeOS, but the compatibility will have many devices of this operating system with Android applications.

    Lenovo Flex 11

    Lenovo Flex 11

    Lenovo Flex 11

This decision by Google can make these gadgets become more popular in a short time. Several manufacturers have climbed the ship of Chromebooks, but in this article, the protagonist is Lenovo, who has released the Lenovo Flex 11, a device whose price does not reach 300 dollars and, on paper, looks good. The highlight of this Chromebook is, apart from the convenience of positioning the screen, which is thought of students.

A design with flexibility in mind, this is how the Lenovo Flex 11

Lenovo has unveiled its Flex 11 as a Chromebook 2 in 1 and has quite in common with this type of devices thanks to the variety of positions in which you can place the touch screen. You can place it as if it were a normal laptop and, from there, you can position the screen as you want, even as a tablet by placing the keyboard area behind you.

Judging by the photos, the Lenovo Flex 11 is designed to make it comfortable to carry everywhere rather than to look 'premium'. The impression given is that it is a relatively thin device thanks to not having the specifications of a normal laptop (and, therefore, do not need so many pieces).

Beyond the flexibility of your screen, there is nothing on this Chromebook that calls the ante much except its resistance to, according to Lenovo, drops of up to 75 cm. In addition, its ports and keyboard are resistant to liquid spills. The fact that the speakers are located in the lower area can worsen the quality of the audio when you use it in portable mode.

Good enough specifications for almost all users

If we look at the numbers of this Lenovo Flex 11, we will find more than enough specifications for most users of a Chromebook, especially if we look at the price tag. The screen has a size of 11.6 inches and a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels which, as we said, is tactile.

As for the processor, the model has not been specified, although it is known to have a maximum clock speed of 2.1 GHz and has four ARM cores. This chip is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and a storage of 32 GB that you can expand with SD cards. Keep in mind that Chromebooks do not require as much storage as traditional laptops.

As for the photographic section, all you see is that there is a sensor on the screen, nothing has been specified, while behind you can not see anything. Actually, that serves for video conferences, it would be more than enough, you can not ask for much.

If you look at its sides, we will have two USB-C ports, one on each side, two standard USB ports, an HDMI and an SD card slot. As for the battery, although they have not given a figure, the manufacturer says it lasts up to 10 hours.

Chrome OS as an operating system, but no support for Android apps … for now

One of the features announced by Google a few months ago and has been well received is the ability to install Android applications on Chrome OS and use them as if it were an Android tablet. This approach between the two operating systems is quite positive and an additional incentive to purchase.

Unfortunately, in the case of Lenovo Flex 11, we do not have the compatibility of Android applications, although the Chinese manufacturer said that the device was designed with this in mind and that soon the apps of that system will be installed on your Chromebook. Hopefully in this regard do not be delayed much, because I could throw back more than one.

Availability and Pricing of Lenovo Flex 11

Lenovo announced that its Flex 11 will be priced at $ 279 and will be available sometime this April. More details on the departure date and where this interesting Chromebook will be available will follow later.

DVEO Launches H.264 Tablet Encoder with Built-In Cameras and Error-Free Live Streamin

The TABLET STREAMER™ is designed for mobile live streaming of events by journalists and other professionals who need an ultra-small field unit that is compatible with industry standard receivers.

    San Diego, California(4/13/2017) -

DVEO®, a well respected supplier to leading telco TV/OTT and cable operators around the world, has developed a unique platform based live streaming H.264 encoder with built-in front and back cameras plus DVEO's patented DOZER™ ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) Automated UDP Packet Recovery protocol.

The TABLET STREAMER™ is designed for mobile live streaming of events by journalists and other professionals who need an ultra-small field unit that is compatible with industry standard receivers.  It connects via WiFi to MiFi cellular gateways or via a built-in sim.  DVEO will introduce the new system at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 24-27, in booth SU5724.

The TABLET STREAMER is the most recent addition to DVEO's product portfolio of real time encoders.  Featuring two built-in 5 megapixel 720p cameras and noise-cancelling microphones, the Linux® based system receives one input from either the front or back camera and encodes it to a single H.264 stream at .1 to 15 Mbps, up to 720p 60.  IP output protocols include UDP, RTP, DASH, HTTP Live (HLS), or RTMP (Open Flash).

"The tiny unit allows anyone to acquire quality live content in remote locations at a reasonable cost, via a non-proprietary lightweight device," stated Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO.  "We recommend it for mobile and event oriented streaming, and as a journalist tool."

"The TABLET STREAMER incorporates DVEO's patented DOZER™ ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) UDP protocol extension to deliver pack loss free and jitter free video and audio over IP networks including wireless and the Internet, " Laszlo Zoltan went on to say.  "The DOZER protocol can be turned off if operators select to stream to Verizon® or Akamai® CDNs and turn on upLynk™ or Infinite Uplink™."

The TABLET STREAMER provides a preview so operators can see the video being streamed.  It streams and records at the same time and video s treams are saved to the internal solid state drive.

The system also enables operators to overlay logos, text, and closed captioning to the stream.  It supports SCTE 35 triggers for ad insertion via SCTE 104 triggers.

The TABLET STREAMER features a touch GUI and a remotely manageable web-based GUI for network and streaming setup.  The touch GUI can also be customized.

An optional single SDI/HD-SDI or HDMI input can be added to the system with a Magewell™ USB adapter.

"This product will find many customers in diverse fields who need to report on events or situations via a tablet-like platform," stated Laszlo Zoltan.

What Does Galaxy S8 Mean for Apple's Next iPhone Release?

As enterprises increasingly embrace mobile business strategies, people continue to carry as many as three devices with them, including laptops, smartphones and tablets. Whether the new software will be the equal of Siri remains to be seen, but Samsung clearly felt that the Galaxy S8 would be lacking an important feature without this addition. On the other hand, 10 years of iPhone is indeed nostalgic so Apple is expected to have the best technology to beat the S8 and to celebrate 10 glorious years.

The S8 will be the first phone to feature Bixby, Samsung's new AI assistant.

A video and two images depicting several Galaxy S8 Plus prototypes with dual camera setups have surfaced online, seemingly corroborating older reports that Samsung was previously considering integrating two main lenses into the rear plate of its latest flagship smartphone.

Samsung and Citrix announced March 30 at a press event in NY that they are connecting the new Samsung DeX dock to Citrix's Receiver software.

"I think the brand will struggle to compete in the longer term with the broader digital ecosystems from Google, Amazon or Apple", Forrester analyst Thomas Husson said. Rumors include an edge-to-edge screen and the removal of the physical home button - just like the S8.

New gender pay reporting won't close the gap, says Women's Equality PartyCatherine Crosby of Dayton Human Relations Council said all that missing money can add up to thousands of dollars per year. April 4 is the earliest it's been in a while, but the USA still has a way to go to eliminate the gender pay gap.

Jose Mourinho opens up about Manchester United's training scheduleSpeaking in Belgium, Ibrahimovic was asked whether he and United's other attacking players could have done more to put the result beyond doubt.

Umpire hurt; Orioles hit 4 HRs, beat slumping Blue Jays 6-4With the recall of Asher from Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles optioned RHP Stefan Crichton to the Tides. Outfielder Craig Gentry replaced Castillo, stole second and eventually made it home on two flyouts.

Nonetheless, the effort that Samsung has made to redefine what the Galaxy S8 delivers has placed a certain onus on Apple to deliver something outstanding with the iPhone 8.

It also seems probable that Apple will respond to the Galaxy S8 by introducing wireless charging. The early buzz for the S8 has been mostly positive. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is Samsung's answer to the Note 7 issue from previous year so they went all out for people to move on from that debacle and focus on the latest one. The company had to recall, then discontinue, those devices after faulty batteries caused sudden fires. However, as spotted by MobileSyrup, it looks like some third-party developers have already built Bixby integration into their apps and will support the technology come April 21st. This would make the larger version of the iPhone 8 range quad HD, which would put it virtually on a par with the Galaxy S8.

The iPhone won't be the first to have an edge-to-edge screen, but you can bet the company will describe it as revolutionary.

Are people really choosing a phone based on bezels?

Microsoft Announces Surface Book 2 Release

In October 2015, the Surface Book premiered as a hybrid device, one Microsoft called the "ultimate laptop." Shipping with a detachable screen, stylus support and a dual-core Intel Skylake processor of your choosing, we had a hunch the company was right. Despite an appetizing list of hardware specs, the 2-in-1 arrived with a few hiccups. There were some complaints surrounding the "Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge," including a gap that's formed when the laptop is closed. The "Clipboard" tablet portion of the device has a low battery life, though that's been largely mitigated with the introduction of the Performance Base-enhanced i7 variant; but, on the high end, the pricing is rather steep, too.

Humboldt’s Inmates to Receive Tablet-Aided Education

    Andrew Goff / Today @ 4:34 p.m. / Community Services Humboldt's Inmates to Receive Tablet-Aided Education

    Image: Edovo

    PREVIOUSLY:

    County of Humboldt press release:

Today, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a pilot project that will provide inmates in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility access to education on an electronic tablet platform. The focus of this project will be to maintain compliance with Title 15 section 1061, which requires the Humboldt County Jail to provide voluntary academic/vocational education of both sentenced and non-sentenced inmates. The pilot project will expand educational programs to the entire population of the facility and introduce additional educational content in the continued effort to aid with offender's re-entry into the community and help reduce recidivism.

Jail Education Solutions, Inc., also known as Edovo, will contract with the county to provide the educational service, beginning with a 90-day pilot project in a section of the facility. No taxpayer dollars will be used for this project. The trial will cost about $12,000 for the leasing fees and infrastructure set-up, paid for out of the Sheriff's Office Inmate Welfare Fund.  This fund is generated from phone and commissary commissions and is required to be used for inmate benefit, such as educational programs.

Edovo is already established in county correctional facilities in Sacramento and Madera.  Their vast educational content includes courses  GED/High school equivalency, basic literacy, ESL, employment training and job skill development, health and wellness including substance abuse treatment, anger management, and cognitive behavior therapy.  Edovo will also interface with College of the Redwoods to allow access to their curriculum as well, which will supplement the classes already being taught in the facility. These tablets will not be internet accessible and all the content is regulated and tracked by the correctional facility staff.

After the initial three months, the Sheriff's Office will evaluate the program to determine if the educational would benefit the inmates and reduce recidivism in the community.

Sony Has A New Extra Thin E Ink Tablet

A very thin E Ink tablet has been unveiled by Sony. The new DPT-RP1 model has a $700 price tag and it represents a pretty substantial upgrade over Sony's 13.3-inch Digital Paper tablet from 2014.

Its resolution has increased from 1200 x 1600 dots to 1650 x 2200 dots. The new model is also thinner and lighter.

Like the prior Digital Paper, the DPT-RP1 is still limited to reading PDF files. Using the included Digital Paper App for desktops, websites and documents can be converted into PDF form and sent wirelessly to the tablet for writing.

Sony will release the device in Japan on June 5.
