Eve V Tablet PC Ships with CalMAN Color Calibration

While Windows tablet PCs have generally not been on my radar when it comes to AV-related topics, a press release that arrived in my inbox today got my attention.  The Eve V is a fully crowdsourced product, not just the funding for development but also its actual design. Everything about it is the result of customer input. The feature that's of interest to color geeks is that each Eve V will ship from the factory with a custom CalMan calibration.

CalMan Client 3 comes preinstalled on each Eve V and handles the corrections necessary for the display to show accurate colors. How accurate? According to Martin Fishman, co-CEO of Portrait Displays "Referencing delta E, the industry-standard measure of color error, CalMAN can correct each Eve V so that the human eye can see no color error."

The Eve V is akin to Microsoft's Surface Tablet PC in terms of form factor. But interestingly, this crowdsourced device is available in five configurations, each of which costs considerably less than an equivalent Surface. And despite that,  the Eve V comes with the factory color calibration!

It's worth noting that you don't have to purchase a Eve V to enjoy accurate color on your laptop or tablet PC. CalMan sells all the tools you need to do it yourself, or you could have a calibration pro do it for you. But either of those options is bound to be costly and requires extra effort.

"CalMan is the same software used by the largest broadcasters, filmmakers, and post-production houses to ensure accuracy in reference monitors…" said Eve CEO Konstantinos Karatsevidis. "That is why we partnered with Portrait Displays, the world leader in color accuracy, to ensure that each Eve V is made as color-accurate as possible."

The five models, specs and pricing are as follows:

Anyone interested in the Eve V can get more info by clicking here. Preorders for this hyper color-accurate tablet PC begin December 4, for what it's worth.

Google’s Pixel C tablet gets a little love in Android 8.1 preview with new launcher features from Pixel phones

Android just keeps getting better and better on phones, but Android tablets are very much neglected. There haven't been any meaningful improvements to Android on tablets in years, but Google hasn't totally forgotten them. In the latest Android 8.1 preview, the Pixel C tablet has gotten just a bit of attention.

A quick recap in case you've understandably forgotten, the Pixel C was Google's last tablet release back in late 2015. It's still the only tablet in the Google Store, even seeing major price cuts in some regions, and it's also one of the few decent Android tablets available today, and the only one running Android Oreo.

Google has made a habit of quietly making changes to the Pixel C's software to better align it with the Pixel smartphones, from adding new navigation buttons to a fresh launcher in previous updates. However, in this latest update, we simply get some new launcher features.

As Android Police notes, the Pixel Launcher on the C in the latest 8.1 developer preview brings a few features from the Pixel phones over to the tablet. That includes the redesigned "app shortcuts" menu that debuted on the original Pixel on Oreo, and we also get the ability to use changing icon shapes and toggle notification dots. Further, the app drawer now utilizes the full size of the tablet's screen rather than being condensed to the center.

If you're still using a Pixel C, you can check out these changes by either signing up for the Android 8.1 beta program, or by sideloading the launcher update.

NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Update Intros KRACK Fix & Nov. Patch

The newest NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet update is introducing the KRACK Wi-Fi fix and the November 5th security patch, alongside a few other improvements and bug fixes that will lead to the overall better user experience and improved security. This update brings the tablet up to version 5.3 and while the KRACK and Broadpwn Wi-Fi vulnerabilities are a main focus of the update there are other security improvements and fixes that are being introduced as well.

As mentioned above the November 5th Security Patch is coming along with this update, so in addition to the KRACK fix and the Broadpwn fix, all of the vulnerabilities that Google pushed out to Nexus and Pixel devices earlier this month are also part of the patch. There are also some improvements that NVIDIA has made to issues users have been having with Zagg Bluetooth keyboards. According to NVIDIA's release notes the update should fix any connectivity issues that people were having with these keyboards when trying to link them up with the tablet. For users who were having this problem, updating the SHIELD Tablet should allow you to bypass any intermittent problems and connect the keyboard and have it stay connected.

The last bit of detail that NVIDIA mentions in the release notes is that there are some overall improvements and optimizations that have been made to the security and the performance of the tablet, so using it should feel smoother all around. For SHIELD Tablet owners, this should feel like a pretty big update as the last one that brought the device up to version 5.2 was all the way back in May, even though the only big things this update introduces are the November 5th patch and the fixes for two big vulnerabilities that were quite concerning should the fixes have not been put in place. It's also worth remembering that this is an older device so there aren't likely to be any more updates that actually introduce new features, or any big ones at least. That said the security updates that are now out for the tablet are still important, and any users who still have the SHIELD Tablet and use it actively will want to update as soon as they possibly can.

Clarks tracks footwear inventory with in-store mobile tablets

Brief

Author By

Robert Williams

• Published Nov. 27, 2017

Brief:
  • Clarks, a footwear retailer with more than 500 stores in the U.K., has deployed 4,000 tablets to track store inventories. The tablets rely on mobile data technology from Scandit, which bolsters Clark's Stock Assist app and lets salespeople quickly confirm if a customer's product choices are in stock, according to a press release.
  • Scandit's Barcode Scanner SDK powers the mobile data capture, allowing store staff to quickly scan barcodes on display products to obtain access to stock records, price, product details and photos. The scanning function is also useful for backroom staff who can scan a shoebox to retrieve product information for faster sales response, per the release.
  • Rafal Hartzhorne, omnichannel transformation lead at Clarks, said the app helps to speed up sales tasks for more productive and responsive customer service. Clarks also uses the Scandit Barcode Scanner, which reads barcodes even if they have been torn, damaged, worn or are blurry.
  • Insight:

Mobile technology is transforming the in-store experience, not only for consumers but also for salespeople who want to focus on providing better customer service to shoppers. Devices like tablets and other hardware can help to supplement the product information provided by salespeople, as evidenced by the partnership between Clarks and Scandit.

In addition to using mobile tech to monitor inventory, as Clarks is doing, retailers need to create personalized shopping experiences for customers that include keeping track of their preferences. A recent survey of retail industry executives by researcher PSFK found that 61% of respondents said shoppers value experiences over direct commerce, making that a key way for brick-and-mortar stores to compete against the pivot to online shopping. As a result, 68% of retailers will be investing in data tracking, collection and management and 55% for in-store experiences by 2020, according to PSFK.

An omnichannel approach is especially important as retailers face challenges from e-commerce companies like Amazon that have steadily eroded the customer base of department stores, shopping malls and big-box retailers. This data-driven approach means that retailers can adopt strategies that have been a core part of Amazon's methods of cross-selling, up-selling and offering special discounts to shoppers based on their personalized purchase history and product searches.

As PSFK's survey of retail executives found, 59% said consumers are willing to exchange their personal data for personalized services and product offerings.

Datos IO Targets Enterprise Customers for Cloud Data Management Use Cases with Latest Product Release of RecoverX 2.5

Datos IO Targets Enterprise Customers for Cloud Data Management Use Cases with Latest Product Release of RecoverX 2.5

    Thursday, November 16, 2017 3:00 PM UTC

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 16, 2017 -- Datos IO, the application-centric cloud data management company, today announced a significant upgrade to its RecoverX software platform that builds on the momentum the company has achieved since shipping its first product in 2016. This includes onboarding multiple Fortune 500 customers, launching joint solutions with strategic partners such as NetApp and Cisco, and extending public cloud partnerships with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Oracle Cloud. As organizations expand their use of cloud-native applications while maintaining strict standards against ransomware threats and racing to meet GDPR requirements, the latest release delivers important new product capabilities, including advanced recovery features for near-zero RTO, enterprise security features and support for geo-distributed cloud deployments.

Tweet this: [email protected]_IO releases #RecoverX upgrade #backupanywhere with #enterprisesecurity and #zeroRTO - closing 2017 on fire with Fortune 500 adoption

RecoverX 2.5 – Cloud Data Management for The Data Driven Enterprise

Modern applications deployed in public cloud environments and across multiple clouds are emerging as the de facto enterprise architecture. This modern IT architecture is comprised of microservices-based cloud native applications being deployed on the elastic databases, elastic compute and elastic storage services of cloud environments, requiring a fundamental reinvention of data management.

"The momentum we are experiencing with our customers is strong validation that data management needs to be reinvented for the multi-cloud era.  Like Veritas did for the traditional data center and Veeam did for virtualized environments, Datos IO is setting the standard for data management for modern applications and cloud workloads," said Tarun Thakur, CEO and co-founder of Datos IO. "With our latest product capabilities such as queryable restores, data-center aware backup, and advanced enterprise security, RecoverX 2.5 delivers to our customer's expectations and extends our technology leadership in cloud data management for modern cloud applications."

Datos IO's RecoverX solution is built upon CODR™, the company's seminal scale-out distributed data management architecture. CODRtm is rooted in elastic compute services for cloud applications, a distributed metadata catalog for data portability, industry-first semantic deduplication for backup storage efficiency of modern cloud workloads, and granular backup and orchestrated recovery capabilities – all geared towards aligning data management to be application-centric. RecoverX supports modern and cloud data sources in the digital enterprise such as MongoDB, Apache Cassandra, Apache Hadoop and Cloudera and supports data protection use cases including backup and recovery to/from/within the cloud, test/dev in the cloud, DR to/from the cloud and cloud instantiation.

"The rapid proliferation of business critical, 3rd platform applications built on NoSQL databases and Big Data file systems requires a re-evaluation of organizations' data protection strategy," said Ritu Jyoti, Research Director, IDC's Enterprise Storage, Server and Infrastructure Software team. "Datos IO represents a new breed of backup and recovery solution designed specifically to address the unique requirements of these new, modern applications."

Datos IO RecoverX 2.5 builds on this unmatched technology innovation to offer enhanced value to customers, including:

  • Advanced Recovery: The amount of data organizations need to protect is rapidly increasing but customers are constantly demanding faster RTOs to meet their business agility requirements and to address mandatory IT requirements such as those required by GDPR. These same organizations are typically building customer-centric applications that span hundreds of tables, with hundreds of TB's of data (aka "Big Data"), with change rates approaching 300%, yet they expect recovery times of just a few hours. To address this new class of recovery requirements, RecoverX 2.5 now delivers advanced features including queryable recovery enabling fast, sub-table level recovery, as well as incremental and streaming recovery, both of which reduce recovery times down to minutes and minimize storage requirements for large scale restore operations;
  • Backup Anywhere, Recover Anywhere: Cyber attacks like ransomware present a real threat and organizations need to protect their data across data sources, applications, and any geographical boundary. Increasingly, customers have database tables spanning multiple data centers and multiple continents, but they want their data to be backed up and restored at the granularity of a single data center location. RecoverX 2.5 now delivers on this requirement with support for local backup of geo-distributed applications enabling local data center recovery for faster and more flexible RTO;
  • Enterprise Grade Security:  Datos IO is experiencing massive adoption in large enterprise customers across retail, ecommerce, financial services and healthcare organizations all of which have significant security requirements. RecoverX 2.5 introduces support for TLS/SSL encryption, support for X.509 certificates, LDAP authorization and Kerberos authentication to deliver optimized security between RecoverX and data sources and integration with enterprise security management tools.
  • Customer Momentum

Datos IO continues to experience rapid growth in 2017, doubling its installed base in just the first half of its fiscal year, with 50% of its customers in the Fortune 500, spanning all major industry verticals.

In addition to recent customer wins including a Fortune 100 telco provider, and a Fortune 50 healthcare provider, examples of Datos IO customers include:

  • Fortune 100 Home Improvement Retailer – this customer rearchitected their ecommerce application from a monolithic, on-premises-based deployment architecture to microservices based cloud native application, deployed on Apache Cassandra cloud databases, all running natively on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). With RecoverX, they achieved their required recovery SLA of one hour, reduced their backup storage cost by approximately 82% and automated their test/dev refresh process, enhancing DevOps productivity while supporting their continuous integration / development (CI/CD) methodologies.
  • Maxwell Health - this leading HR benefits management service was challenged with protecting their SaaS-based employee benefits application built on MongoDB databases running natively on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Using native tools, they were unable to meet their backup and recovery SLAs, and were incurring high monthly AWS S3 storage costs and developer productivity was hampered by a manual, script-based test/dev refresh process. With RecoverX automated backup and recovery, semantic deduplication and API-driven architecture they achieved greater than 90% reduction in backup storage costs, and reduced restore time by more than 30%, thereby meeting their recovery SLAs and increasing developer productivity by fully automating their test/dev refresh process.
  • World's Leading Online Restaurant Reservation Company – using a native backup methodology this leading online restaurant reservation service was challenged with high costs, a complex recovery process that hampered DevOps productivity, and the inability to meet their recovery time objectives (RTO) for their reservations application built upon sharded MongoDB clusters running in datacenters spanning two continents. Using Datos IO RecoverX, the customer achieved a dramatic reduction in backup storage costs with RecoverX semantic deduplication, met their RTO by leveraging parallel data streaming and single-copy restore, and eliminated operational complexity and improved DevOps productivity using RecoverX's policy-based management and automation.
  • Rich Industry Partnerships and Product Integrations

Datos IO is committed to supporting the richest ecosystem of cloud environments, applications, and hybrid cloud infrastructures. RecoverX already supports a broad range of modern technologies, including database sources such as Apache Cassandra, DataStax, Apache Hadoop (HDFS), Cloudera and MongoDB, cloud providers including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform and Oracle Cloud and storage and infrastructure solutions from Cisco, NetApp, Cloudian, Igneous Systems and VMware.

Notable recent additions to the Datos IO ecosystem include:

  • Next Generation Data Center (NGDC) Workloads with NetApp and SolidFire: Datos IO and NetApp have partnered to provide robust and scalable solutions for storing, managing and protecting modern cloud applications that are prevalent in next-generation-data-center (NGDC) environments. The combined NetApp and Datos IO RecoverX solution provides complete storage performance predictability, enables rapid application deployment with guaranteed application performance and offers fully orchestrated backup and recovery for modern applications built on modern databases such as MongoDB and others.
  • Private Cloud Environments with Non-Relational Databases being Deployed on VMware: Datos IO RecoverX recently qualified as VMware Ready for the Application Software category, enabling customers to protect their next-generation applications and NoSQL databases deployed on VMware environments for private cloud deployments.
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): About 60% of Datos IO's customers are using RecoverX natively "in" the cloud to protect modern applications. Based upon this customer momentum, Datos IO recently achieved Advanced Technology Partner status in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN), demonstrating its proven product merits for cloud-native applications and workloads, validated customer engagement and overall product enterprise readiness.
  • Cloudera: As a member of the Cloudera Connect Partner Program, Datos IO has access to a broad range of resources and support from Cloudera to ensure Cloudera's enterprise customers can leverage Datos IO RecoverX for backup and recovery, with unique features including file level deduplication across the cluster to provide storage efficiency at petabyte scale.
  • Channel Partner Program – Recognizing the critical role channel partners play in helping organizations navigate their digital transformation journeys, Datos IO launched its Rebellion Partner Program and welcomed new partners including Promark Technology, GroupWare Technology, Technologent, Evotek and others.
  • "Data protection is a critical enabler of digital transformations and creates an enormous opportunity for the reseller community," stated Ned Engelke, CTO, EVOTEK. "With their application-centric approach and new capabilities like queryable restore, incremental restore, and data center aware backup and recovery, Datos IO RecoverX is the data protection solution we take to our customers to address the new requirements of modern cloud applications."

'Things were dark, but cricket was my release'

Regrets? He's had a few. But then again, fewer than you might expect him to mention.

"I had a lot of problems but I wouldn't swap what I did, because of the love of playing for Durham and England," says Steve Harmison, the former England fast bowler. "There were times when things were dark, but there was times when cricket was my release. I was a maverick, for want of a better word. I could win a game in a spell, or go at nine an over and lose it there and then."

Where Ashes series are concerned, this truism has been distilled into a handful of identifiable deliveries. The elbow clanger to Justin Langer and the cobra bite to Ricky Ponting's cheek at Lord's - early indications in that seismic summer of 2005 that Australia were about to face a challenge such as they had never before encountered.

One Test later, that slower ball to Michael Clarke and that desperate looping rib-tickler to Michael Kasprowicz at Edgbaston - moments recalled with freeze-frame clarity by a generation of England cricket fans, who had been taken to the brink and left there to dangle before that moment of sweet release.

And then, on the first morning of the Ashes rematch in 2006-07, at Brisbane's infamous "Gabbatoir" no less - that ball, that wide. That powder-puff, biomechanic apology of a misfire that curled straight into the hands of Andrew Flintoff at second slip and signalled - symbolically at least - the surrender of the urn that England had worked themselves to a standstill to earn 18 months earlier.

"When we went to Australia in 2006-07, only four players turned up," Harmison says. "And of the three or four senior players who didn't turn up, I was probably top of the tree."

Looking back on that delivery, a little over a decade ago, it's hard now to recall quite how much of a passion-killer it really was. There were other deliveries in the course of England's 5-0 whitewash, and plenty other disappointments - mere mention of the word "Adelaide", for instance, cricket's own version of the "Scottish play", still brings fans of a certain disposition out in hives.

And yet, that first delivery stands the test of time - as symbolic a shortcoming as has ever been served up on such a grand stage. As James Alexander Gordon might have said to the massed ranks of England fans in the Gabba that morning, "if you don't want to know the result, look away now".

"It wasn't so much the first ball itself but the build-up," Harmison says now. "I needed a lot of bowling to get my rhythm going, but I felt my side go in our final warm-up game in Adelaide, so I took the precautionary option of not playing. So I didn't have 25 overs under my belt going into the Test. I felt good in practice, but then I got to the top of my mark "

Rewatching the footage of that fierce first morning, the main thing that strikes you is the noise. The tribal roar of a packed amphitheatre, tracking Harmison's every step to the wicket, followed by a slightly baffled change of key as Langer shapes to leave well alone, and a renewed outburst of derision as umpire Steve Bucknor spreads out his arms to signal the inevitable. Yes, it was just a solitary moment in time. But what a time, and what a message to relay to the most hostile audience in the sport.

"It's one of those things, as a big tall bowler, you only have to be a little bit out," Harmison says. "I was in no position to let go of the ball. Your front arm leads and your bowling arm follows. And I had no control. It came off my third finger and looped into Andrew's hand. If you freeze the action, you can see I'm losing my left side. I was trying far too hard to bowl too fast.

"It could have gone behind me. Did I freeze? Possibly. I just think I tried too hard."

England's players mob Steve Harmison after he took the final wicket in dramatic style Getty Images

Harmison remains adamant that the moment caused no lasting damage to England's hopes on that ill-fated tour. "That first ball didn't set the tone. Australia were so much up for it, and ready. The England team weren't good enough then.

"It affected me for about eight hours, when I look back on it. Two soldiers were killed in Afghanistan on that same day, around the same time. And when I watched the news that night, I thought 'what has the world come to?'"

But there was, he admits, an underlying guilt at his performance, both in that match and on the trip in general, in which he claimed 10 wickets at 61.40 in the five Tests. "The disappointing thing was one of my best mates in life was the man in charge. And my performance was probably the worst I've been on tour."

That mate, of course, was Flintoff - "Freddie" to the wider public, but very resolutely "Andrew" to his closest acquaintance. Their friendship was famously forged on an Under-19 tour to Pakistan in 1996-97, when Harmison suffered his first attack of what was then euphemistically described as "homesickness". With Flintoff's help, he found a means to abandon the trip, and they remained as close as twins thereafter.

Attitudes to mental illness in sport have become considerably more enlightened in the eight years since the last of Harmison's 63 Tests - and the bouts of depression that he so clearly endured in the course of his England career can now be called out for what they really were, as he freely admits in his eloquent and at times moving autobiography, Speed Demons.

"The problem with me was when the doors shut," he says. "Andrew and I always shared a room on tour, but once the doors shut and I was on my own, that's when I was struggling. I'm the most destructive person in my own company. I still am now.

"I was at my worst when I was injured," he adds. "The physios would stick injections in me, I'd have tablets coming out of my backside, because playing was my release, my therapy. I think I would have been a hell of a lot worse if I'd come out and been honest, because I always felt I was one bad game from never playing again for England."

And in fact it was Flintoff, not Harmison, who was first to follow the lead of their team-mate, Marcus Trescothick, and admit - in a documentary in 2012 - how even a player so naturally ebullient as he had endured episodes of depression both during his career, and especially, after it, when his England days were ended prematurely in 2009 by a chronic knee injury.

"Even now, you watch him on TV, the guy you see on League Of Their Own, that's Freddie, and he's fantastic. But the guy I know is Andrew. He's earning a lot of money, and he's so well thought of, the world loves him at this moment in time, but Andrew loved that game of cricket. Apart from his family, cricket was his biggest single love."

Some of the darkest days for Flintoff occurred on that 2006-07 tour, when as captain he found himself powerless to resist Australia's determination to regain the urn, and found too few of his team-mates willing or able to step up in his support.

"Cricket is played by human beings, not robots or egotistical prima donnas. They are real people"

"I knew something wasn't right with Andrew," Harmison says. "He was the right man to captain England at that time - Andrew Strauss would have got beat 5-0 as well. He wanted to take on Australia by himself, because when you are the leader you stand up to be counted. But he suffered in silence. He didn't have people close to him during that period. In particular, his relationship with Duncan Fletcher went downhill, because Duncan struggled to talk to people individually."

The England team's social arrangements on that tour were, at times, particularly dysfunctional, not least over the Christmas period in Melbourne, when the players were billeted in an upmarket apartment block with their families - or in rather miserable isolation, in the case of the squad's many singletons, not least Monty Panesar, another ex-England player who has had to face his demons in recent years.

It was all far removed from the tours on which Harmison would evoke, perhaps unwittingly, the spirit of Ian Botham, and make his hotel-room into the social hub of an England campaign.

"I used to take a dartboard, I had hundreds of DVDs," he says. "I would raid Cadburys before every tour, especially to the subcontinent, and stuff my suitcases with sweets and Haribos. I needed people to come into my room, Swanny nicknamed it the 'Harmison Arms'. It would be stinking hot in there, no windows, but someone would ring room service and shout anyone want a beer. We'd get in 20 of them, chuck buckets of ice in the bath, and do it all again tomorrow.

"Think of a pub when you're comfortable and relaxed," he says. "You can have a meal, have a game of darts, the internet was there I was in my element. I'd rarely watch any of the films but sitting in my chair without people to interact with, I'd be climbing the walls."

And that, in essence, is what happened to Trescothick on the tour of India in 2005-06, and again ahead of the Ashes the following winter, when he was spirited out of the firing line by an England management who, even that recently, were unable to confront his mental struggles and instead dressed his condition up as a "mystery virus".

"Talking to Marcus, when he struggled in India, he shut himself off in his room and was alone with his thoughts," Harmison says. "If I'd known he was as bad as he was Christ, I'd have taken the whole lot to his room.

"Good team-mates pick up on things, and I had people I was close to that I could share it with," he adds. "This was all new to Marcus. He didn't know what he was going through. If only I'd known."

In spite of rising to become such a central figure in England's social set-up, Harmison's relationship with his sporting fame has rarely been less than ambivalent - a feeling that was set in motion by his very earliest encounters with the national squad, back in the summer of 2000.

At that time, right on the cusp of the central contract revolution that would change the landscape for Harmison's generation of players, the England dressing-room remained a jealous and petty environment, with the individuals therein more fearful of personal failure than motivated by collective success.

It certainly was not a welcoming environment for a gawky new boy from county cricket's youngest club. "I was from a football background and didn't know what cricket was," he says. "I'm from a football background, Durham were eight years old in 2000. I'd played 30-35 matches in my career. I don't know what international cricket was, and now I'd been picked to go to Lord's."

Harmison elaborates on a tale that he tells in his autobiography, one that brought home to him, at the age of 21, the absurdity of his sudden elevation.

Friends reunited: Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff Getty Images

"I was on the train down from Newcastle, and a group of kids with special needs were in the same carriage, on their way to the museum at York. I thought should I move, but actually I enjoyed their company because it was their day out and also my day out, because I was going to London in the squad to play cricket for England.

"Pulling in at York, a right old battleaxe got up and started telling the kids exactly what will happen. 'Anyone move,' she said, 'they'll be straight back on the train'. And then she did a headcount, 'One, two, three ' and looked at me.

""Who are you and what are you doing?' And honestly my backside fell out. I looked at her and said 'I'm Stephen and I'm going to play cricket for England in London ' She just pointed at me and said 'Four ' and that was about right.

"They were having their day out, I was having mine, when I got to Lord's, I didn't get picked in the Test match, I spent three days there on an experience, and when I left to go back to Durham, part of me was thinking I wish I'd got off at York and gone with those kids, because I would have had a better time.

"I wanted to be around people who wanted to be together, be a group and do something meaningful. The era I came into didn't have structure, but the system was better when I left. The players were better, and stronger."

Harmison strikes a curious note in an otherwise sympathetically pitched autobiography when he revisits the events of England's last trip to the Gabba, in 2013-14, and Jonathan Trott's hasty departure from the tour, in the wake of his twin dismissals by the ferocious pace of Mitchell Johnson.

Trott, Harmison wrote, had displayed mental "weakness" rather than mental "illness" in his actions, in particular when Trott spoke about the incident some months later and insisted that he was not a "nutcase".

"I was quite critical of him," he says. "I'm just going from what I've seen with my eyes and what he's said in interview. I've got no doubt he was feeling down, but the words he was using weren't those of a person who had suffered. But on the other hand, was he just trying to show the bravado? Trying to show he was not weak? It could be he just didn't put it across right and, if that's the case, I take everything back."

Or it could just have been the intimidation factor of the Gabba that tipped Trott over the brink on that tour, much as Harmison himself might recall from his own fateful day 11 years ago.

"Cricket is played by human beings, not robots or egotistical prima donnas who are kept away from everything," he says. "They are real people." And through triumph and occasional high-profile failure, the sport is all the greater for that fact.

ANDOVER — Police have identified the woman who died in a five-car crash on Interstate 495 southbound this morning as Maureen Bonnell, 59, of Haverhill.

Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Andover barracks responded to reports of the crash at around 6:40 a.m., where trooper Thomas Hollow discovered a 2010 Honda CRV driven by Bonnell had struck at 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck from behind, according to a press release issued by state police Tuesday morning.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 57-year-old man from South Berwick, Maine, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was transported to Lawrence General Hospital.

Three other vehicles were involved, including a Toyota 4Runner driven by a 51-year-old man from Newton, New Hampshire, a Chevrolet Impala driven by a 22-year-old man from North Andover, and a Mazda 3, driven by a 54-year-old woman from Farmington, New Hampshire, but none of the drivers were injured.

State police said a "preliminary investigation indicated traffic was slow or at a near standstill prior to the crash, due to regular commuters, when the Honda CRV struck the GMC Sierra at a speed greater than that of the other traffic."

The crash caused considerable traffic delays, as the right two lanes were closed until the scene was cleared just before 9 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers assigned to State Police Andover barracks.

Police release video showing possible armed home invasion suspects

OKLAHOMA CITY — Police are searching for multiple suspects following an armed home invasion.

"My 3-year-old was just hiding under the covers," the homeowner, who wanted to remain anonymous, told News 4.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday in southwest Oklahoma City. The homeowner said she left the door open while taking her daughter to school.

"I got back, and it was locked but I was like, oh, I got a key," she said. "So, I try to open it, but some black guy opened it for me, pointed a gun to my head."

The suspect, along with multiple others, then started making demands.

The homeowner said all she could think about was her husband and kids, who were asleep but quickly woke to the chaos.

"At first, they were like get on the floor, get on the floor, don't look at us," the woman said.

Then, they demand a long list of things, including cash.

"When my husband opened the safe, when they had I guess what they wanted, they told us to go to the restroom and just locked us in there," she said.

The suspect's got away with cell phones, tablets, guns and about $6,000 in cash.

Before they got away, the woman's husband tried to stop them.

"The homeowners did fire rounds. However, it's not believed that he actually struck any of the suspects," said Megan Morgan with the OCPD.

Fortunately, nobody in the family was hurt.

"I was like 'don't do anything to us, my babies are here.' They were like 'we won't do anything to the kids.' I was like everybody says that. I'm like I don't trust you," she said.

So far, no arrests have been made.

The victims told police that three men entered her home.  One of the men was a bald African-American with a medium build who was wearing a black sweater.  Another suspect is described as a bald white male with a skinny build who was wearing glasses and a grey sweater.  The third suspect is described as an overweight African-American male who had a shirt over his face.

Police have since released surveillance video from the area that shows two men walking in the area at the time of the robbery.

Authorities would like to speak with the men regarding information they may have about the crime.

If you have any information that could help police, please call Crime Stoppers at (405)235-7300.

Earlier this year, Apple announced that it would be releasing its first smart speaker called the HomePod in late 2017. If you were holding out for one of these new devices, you will have to wait a little bit longer.

The company announced today that they will be delaying the HomePod until early 2018 by releasing the following statement:

We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers. We'll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018."

There are a few things to note here about this, the first is that the delay pushes this past the holiday shopping season. For Apple, this may not be a big deal as their products tend to sell well no matter when they are released but it does make you wonder what the issue is with the device.

Considering it was announced with a six-month window to finalize and build the product, the issues must have been serious to warrant this move. But on the other hand, this is a good thing (for those who are buying it) for the consumer as shipping a buggy product is worse than not shipping one at all.

What this does mean though is that Google, Amazon and even Microsoft will have digital home assistants for sale this year and that Apple will be late to the party. Does that matter? Likely not, as the company will still sell millions of phones and tablets with Siri baked into the hardware.

The company is not giving an exact timeline for release but it doesn't look like, at least from the announcement today, that the product is delayed a significant amount of time.

Hands-on with the Acer Switch 7 Black Edition 2-in-1 tablet (coming in 2018 for $1699)

The Acer Switch 7 Black Edition is a premium 2-in-1 tablet with an Intel Core i7-8550U quad-core processor, NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics, a detachable keyboard, and pen and touch input.

First unveiled in August, Acer says the 13.5 inch tablet should be available in early 2018 for $1699.

Sure, that's a lot of money for a tablet, but the Switch 7 Black Edition has a lot going for it including a fanless design, a high-resolution display, and a relatively compact design: the tablet weighs just 2.5 pounds.

I got a chance to spend a few minutes with a pre-release version of the Switch 7 Black Edition this evening, and while I can't say much about performance or battery life (Acer says it should last for up to 8 hours on a charge), it does have an attractive design and the 2256 x 1504 pixel display looks pretty sharp.

The tablet also has a few nice touches that make it stand out a bit at a time when every PC maker seems to have a 2-in-1.

The Switch 7 Black Edition's kickstand automatically pops out when you gently slap the end of the tablet on a table or desk.

The Wacom pen that comes with the tablet supports 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and allows you to do many of the things you'd do with a mouse when you're in tablet mode. But unlike a lot of digital pens on the market, this one doesn't require a battery and you can slide the pen into a slot in the tablet when you're not using it.

The detachable keyboard cover features backlit keys and has an under-glass fingerprint sensor. Typing feels pretty good, all things considered. But like most keyboard covers you can feel the whole thing squish a bit if you press too hard on the keys. It's also not going to be quite as easy to balance the Switch 7 Black Edition on your lap as it would be to use a more traditional notebook.

Overall, the Switch 7 Black Edition seems like a promising device that could be competitive with high-end Microsoft Surface Pro tablets. But it'd be nice if there were some lower-specced models with lower starting prices, because even with all of those bonus features, $1699 is a lot of money to spend on a tablet.

Can tablets help kindergartners learn math?

By the end of December, all kindergartners in the Lansing School District – more than 1,000 – will receive a PBS KIDS Playtime Pad thanks to a partnership between PBS, Michigan State University, WKAR and the Lansing School District.

The Playtime Pad Research Project studies the effectiveness of tablet-based learning in early childhood math literacy. The pads used in the study include preloaded PBS KIDS educational game apps, but are also customized to include a special math game study app, designed by PBS KIDS software developers, in consultation with MSU early childhood education researchers. The app includes a mix of math games.

On Monday, kindergarteners at Lansing's Kendon Elementary received the first batch of Playtime Pads, which are 7-inch android tablets, available at retailers.

"We are honored to be working with the Lansing School District on this exciting outreach program and tablet-based learning study," said Susi Elkins, general manager at WKAR Public Media, which is housed in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. "This project brings quality PBS educational games and programming from the PBS KIDS Playtime Pad to Lansing kindergartners through new technology that children love, and allows us to strengthen the community connection between MSU, WKAR and the Lansing schools."

Amy Parks, associate professor of teacher education, and Laura Tortorelli, assistant professor of teacher education, will lead the research. They will collect anonymous data from the app, from periodic surveys of parents and teachers and from LSD's AIMSWEB testing program.

The study is unique because widely available PBS KIDS math apps will be tested for effectiveness, Parks said. Most studies of this kind are based on specially designed applications rather than what is publicly available.

"Our goal is to see what teachers choose to do with the tablets and look at the impact on student learning," Parks said. "We expect there will be variation in how engaging various applications are, as well as variation in the extent to which these applications impact learning. We also expect applications will impact different kids in different ways."

In addition to the research component of the project, the partnership gives teachers, parents and students access to the latest technology and PBS KIDS digital learning tools.

The Lansing School District has identified a need for good research in this age group and in an urban district like Lansing to help teachers make learning more effective and fun for kids, said superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul.

"This is really going to be an exciting partnership and adventure thanks to our friends at WKAR and Michigan State University," Caamal Canul said. "The young students will get to explore the world on the Playtime Pads and the researchers will know more about how children use technology to learn."

The Lansing School District is the largest public school district in mid-Michigan, with 17 elementary schools.

"This project is about partnerships," said Prabu David, dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. "MSU, WKAR, Lansing schools and PBS KIDS have come together to empower our students, families and teachers by introducing a new technology in the classroom. I'm excited about the possibilities these tablets offer for instruction and research."

Funding for the project is provided by the National Science Foundation, the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, WKAR Public Media, Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at MSU and the Lansing Rotary Foundation.
