Samsung Galaxy Marshmallow Update Info (2016)

It's now 2016 and many Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet owners are still waiting for the first public Android Marshmallow release.

Its been four months, four months, since Google started rolling out its Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system.

Many manufacturers were quick to release the new update and its changes. Others, like Samsung, have been extremely slow to release the Marshmallow update.

Earlier this month, after weeks of rumors and several days of confusion, Samsung finally took a step in the right direction.Galaxy-S6-10-3.37.21-PM

Today we want to take a look at everything we know so far about Samsung's plans for current Galaxy smartphone and tablet owners.

This also takes a look at some details regarding the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, two devices that are starting to ship out to buyers in the United States.

This roundup is going to walk you through the important details about the Samsung Galaxy Marshmallow release and the updates themselves.

The company hasn't confirmed every single Marshmallow update it plans to offer but the roundup includes information about the Galaxy S6 update, the Galaxy Note 5 update, the Galaxy Note 4 update, the Samsung Galaxy S7, and more.

We'll continue to update this as we, and others, receive more information.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow Update

Samsung has finally confirmed its first trio of Marshmallow updates. Unsurprisingly, they're headed to the Galaxy S6.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update is rolling out for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in Korea. Updates have also started rolling out in the United Kingdom, Iraq and Netherlands as well.

Now that they're making their way to Asia, Europe and the Middle East, we expect more Galaxy S6 Marshmallow updates to follow.

Galaxy-S6-Android-6-0-1

Telus in Canada is one of the first to confirm specific dates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Marshmallow roll out.

The carrier notes that the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Marshmallow will roll out first on March 9th followed by the Galaxy S6 Edge Marshmallow update on March 16th followed by the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update on April 13th.

These are approximate dates and are subject to change at a moments notice.

As for the release, in the United States, T-Mobile has confirmed a trio of Galaxy S6 Marshmallow updates and we expect rival carriers in the United States and carriers around the world to follow suit.

T-Mobile's planning Android Marshmallow updates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. None of these updates have moved past the "Manufacturer Development" stage which means that they're still in the lab at Samsung.

Vocal carriers like Rogers (Canada), Vodafone (Australia), Optus (Australia), and Telstra (Australia) continue to remain silent about their plans for the Galaxy S6 and Marshmallow.

Marshmallow Features

Thanks to today's announcements and the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow beta, we know what the Marshmallow update will bring to the flagship devices.

As expected, Marshmallow brings changes to the update's interface. The update replaces blue with white and it changes the look of several app icons.

The update also features the popular Google Now on Tap feature that allows you to quickly bring up information on whatever you're looking at simply by holding down the home button. It's one of our favorite Marshmallow features. The video above outlines the key features.

Samsung will be rolling out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the most up-to-date version of Marshmallow from Google.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update brings a number of key changes to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge including:

  • Additional quick settings toggles for Private Mode in the status bar.
  • New emoji characters (Android 6.0.1 brought more than 200 to Nexus users).
  • Improved visibility of notification panel icons.
  • If a fingerprint isn't recognized, users will only get vibration feedback.
  • A new 'Install overnight' option that will install an update at night between 2 to 5 AM.
  • Samsung has detailed the changes coming to the Galaxy S6 Edge's panel, some of which can be seen in galleries above.

    Galaxy S5 Marshmallow Update

Samsung hasn't rolled out a Galaxy S5 Marshmallow beta yet but the Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update is confirmed.

T-Mobile's confirmed a Galaxy S5 Marshmallow release though like the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update, it's in the "Manufacturer Development" phase. Meaning, it still needs to go through T-Mobile testing before it can be released to the public.

    Galaxy-S5-Review-4

The fact that T-Mobile is planning a Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update is a good sign for other Galaxy S5 users in the United States and around the world. Most carriers are silent about their plans but there's a good chance this roll out will reach everyone.

A report from October backs up this assertion and suggests that development has begun on Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Neo and Galaxy S5 LTE-A Marshmallow updates around the world including here in the United States.

A leaked document suggests that the Galaxy S5 Android Marshmallow release date will take place in March or April of this year. A specific date hasn't been confirmed.

    Features

As for the Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update itself, it has reportedly leaked out a couple of times though we haven't seen an extensive rundown of the software.

    Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow Update

The first Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Android 6.0.1 update is reportedly rolling out to the SM-N920C in Cambodia. It's also reportedly rolling out to carriers in South Korea, a logical step for Samsung and its flagship device.

These are the first confirmed sightings of the official Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update and it means that a roll out for other models is probably getting closer.

Here are a few things we know right now about the Galaxy Note 5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow release in North America.

  • T-Mobile has confirmed the Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update.
  • The AT&T Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update underwent a beta.
  • A SamMobile report from October suggests that work has already begun on updates for Note 5 models around the world.
  • Telus has confirmed a Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update for March 9th.
  • Note-5-review-camera-720x4801

What we don't know is when the Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update will arrive for users in the United States and other regions around the world. Given its status as a flagship smartphone model, we'd expect it to be among the first to get the update.

    Features

Thanks to the beta and the public roll out, we now have some idea about what to expect from the Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow update and its features. The video below shows off the early software and it runs down many of the important changes.

For more on the Marshmallow leak, take a look at this full rundown from XDA-Developers. It reviews the update's early performance. For a more recent set of photos, take a look at these Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow photos.

It also looks like the Galaxy Note 5 Android 6.0.1 update is plagued with issues including battery drain, issues with Gear VR and other smaller bugs. It's not clear how this might impact the overall speed of the roll out.

    Galaxy Note 4 Marshmallow Update

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge will both receive Marshmallow updates in the United States.

T-Mobile's confirmed both updates though neither has budged since last year. They, like the carrier's other Galaxy Marshmallow updates, remain in "Manufacturer Development" purgatory. This likely means that they're weeks away at least.

A leaked document points to a Galaxy Note 4 Marshmallow release in March or April but this isn't confirmed and could change. A Galaxy Note Edge Marshmallow release date is rumored for March or April as well.

    Features

Thanks to a couple of leaks, we know what the Galaxy Note 4 Marshmallow update will probably look like when it arrives.

In addition to that leak, Napidroid claims to have  received a Galaxy Note 4 Marshmallow build on one of their devices.

The early version of the update comes with the new Air Command menu that's found on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5. and there are also some new icons for applications. Similar to the Galaxy S6 update.

It also reportedly comes with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 feature that allows you to take notes when the screen is off. Remember, this is early software and things could change during testing.

    Others

In addition to these popular devices, Samsung will reportedly roll out Marshmallow to the Galaxy A7, Galaxy A8, Galaxy Alpha, and Galaxy Tab S2. T-Mobile's confirmed a Galaxy Tab S2 Marshmallow update.

We'd expect most, if not all, of these devices to follow the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and move to Android 6.0.1 when Marshmallow arrives.

    Samsung Galaxy S7

As expected, the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge both run the company's Android 6.0.1 software.

The two devices, revealed earlier this month at Mobile World Congress, run a unique version of the operating system. You can get a feel for the software in the Galaxy S7 hands-on video below.

It's worth noting that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge do not support Android 6.0's Adoptable Storage feature, a concern given the fact that it only comes with 32GB of internal storage space in the United States.

It's also worth noting that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge come with some additional emoji characters. A full outline of those characters can be found right here.

    February Android Security Update

In early February, Google began rolling out a security update to Nexus devices. Samsung is now rolling out the same update to Galaxy devices.

The update is rolling out to unlocked devices all over the world and it brings some vital patches for potential security exploits.

    note-4-review-2

You can check for the patch in settings or you can simply wait for it to appear in your notifications. The update for Nexus devices was small and we expect the same for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy S5.

For more on the contents of the February security update, take a look at Samsung's rundown of the changes.

    Swiftkey Android 6.0.1 Update

It's worth mentioning that Swiftkey has been updated to support the new emojis that arrived in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Once Android 6.0.1 arrives for your device, you'll be able to use emojis with the popular third-party keyboard.

    Galaxy Android N Update

Marshmallow isn't here yet but we're already hearing about a potential successor to the Marshmallow update.

    Android-M-L-720x5001-720x5001-720x500

XDA-Developers have discovered Android N hints at Samsung's Developer site and it looks like the update could deliver improved stylus support. The site mentions the Edge and it also mentions the company's S Pen.

Apple To Release A 9.7-Inch iPad Pro 2 [REPORT]

After frequent rumors that Apple would release an iPad Air 3 before the end of the year, the latest murmurings on the subject suggest that the consumer electronics giant has caught us completely off-guard with its next generation tablet. Instead of updating its iPad range, it seems that Apple will instead release a successor to the iPad Pro aka iPad Pro 2.

    9.7-Inch iPad Pro 2

    Branding surprise

9to5Mac reports that the consumer electronics giant will differentiate the next iPad release from its predecessor by making it part of the iPad Pro range. The Apple-following publication cites sources close to the Apple supply chain which suggest that Apple will utilize the iPad Pro moniker that it first introduced last year. Whether this will have a significant impact on the construction and specifications of the tablet remains to be seen, what is clear is that Apple believes that the iPad Pro branding has had a successful short lifespan thus far.

So it seems that the iPad Pro will retail in 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch variations in the foreseeable future, and that Apple will not release an iPad Air 3 in the immediate future. Whether the corporation could consider updating the iPad range before the end of the year is open to speculation, and it will also be interesting to see how Apple perceives the future of the iPad Air branding. Clearly there is still a place for a mid-range tablet in the marketplace, but Apple could now choose to redefine how it sees the iPad Air's role in its product range, and it is not inconceivable that it could phase the iPad Air out completely.

This latter possibility must be taken seriously, as this new iPad Pro 2 was developed as a successor to the existing iPad Air. Yet when the new 9.7-inch iPad debuts at the March 15 Apple event, it will be as an iPad Pro 2, not the iPad Air 3 has almost ubiquitously expected and predicted.

    9.7-Inch iPad Pro 2 – Specs migrated

Early reports suggest that the smaller iPad Pro 2 will feature nearly identical functions and specs as the larger model in the series, ensuring that the A9X processor and RAM upgrades from the 12.9-inch model remain intact. The display technology involved will also probably support the Apple Pencil that was introduced with the larger iPad Pro last year.

It has also been suggested that the new smaller iPad Pro model will include a Smart Connector, while it is also likely that Apple will prepare a smaller version of the Smart Keyboard cover attachment for the new iPad Pro 2. Reports have suggested that this is indeed being developed internally at the moment, and that it will be available by the time of the March launch.

As Apple continues to place an increasing emphasis on the music-playing capabilities of its device range, it is also expected that the smaller iPad Pro 2 model will include the quad stereo speakers which debuted last year. It is also likely that Apple will retain the same color options from the initial iPad Pro, but pricing is likely to be significantly reduced.

    Release date

As Apple looks to move quickly with this new device, it seems increasingly inevitable that it will indeed see the light of day at the upcoming March 15 events. Other Apple products are also expected to be unveiled at this massive consumer electronics event, with the four-inch iPhone 5SE particularly expected. Reports have died down regarding the revelation of the Apple Watch 2 at this event, and it is now believed that the smartwatch could be introduced before the end of the year, possibly alongside the premium iPhone 7.

    Size

Aside from the 9.7-inch screen size which has been widely reported in the media, it is also suggested that Apple will imbue the iPad Pro 2 with similar dimensions to the existing iPad Air 2. This will mean that the 6.15mm thick and 169.6mm wide measurements from the iPad Air 2 could be retained, although knowing Apple it wouldn't be surprising if the consumer electronics giant attempts to slim down the device somewhat.

However, MacRumors believes the iPad Pro 2 could actually be a bit larger; suggesting 0.05mm thicker and 0.1mm wider as possible measurements. It is suggested that this will enable the new tablet to embrace a cutout for a Smart Connector similar to the one already included in the iPad Pro. This device enables the tablet to connect to accessories such as the Smart Keyboard, and it seems certain that the iPad Pro 2 will also adopt this particular feature.

    Apple Pencil

Previous reports on the iPad Air 3 were uncertain whether Apple would introduce the Apple Pencil to the range, but the rebranding of this 9.7-inch tablet would suggest that the Apple Pencil will indeed be retained.

    LED flash

Another interesting aspect of the iPad Pro 2, which dates back from industry insiders belief that it would be named the iPad Air 3, is the suggestion that the tablet will include a rear-LED flash. This would be an absolute first for the iPad range, but it seems that despite tablets not being the obvious photographic devices, that Apple is intending to increase the camera capabilities of the iPad Pro 2.

    Other specs

Rumors have already indicated that the iPad Pro 2 could include a 4K resolution display, bringing the tablet in line with the recent 21.5-inch iMac release. 4GB of RAM has been linked with the device, but it is not certain that the 3D Touch pressure-sensitive technology of the iPhone will be migrated into the iPad Pro 2.

    Price

It is early days to predict the price of this unit, but it is largely expected that the iPad Pro 2 could retail at around $600. Apple will probably retain the policy of charging extra money for additional accessories, which means that users will need to shell out more for the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.

Above all else, the iPad Pro 2 will play a major role in enabling Apple to simplify its iPad lineup. As the corporation continues to slow down the production of the older iPad Mini and iPad Air models, the iPad Pro 2 will play a role in refreshing the hugely successful and iconic iPad range.

iPad Air 3 Release Rumors: What We Know So Far

While we didn't see an iPad Air 3 release in 2015, it looks like 2016 will be the year that we will fianlly see it. Here's what we know so far about the iPad Air 3 release, based on rumors.

Apple unfortunately skipped over the iPad Air 3 release late last year during its iPhone 6s event, and instead announced the iPad Pro, which is a 12.9-inch tablet that's now Apple's largest iPad yet, as well as its most expensive tablet by far, with a starting price of $799.

However, Apple hasn't forgotten about its smaller 9.7-inch iPad, and it appears that the company will release the iPad Air 3 this year after skipping a release in 2015, making it the first year that a new iPad hasn't been released.

Read: Apple 2016 Predictions: iPhone 7, Apple Watch 2 & More

The iPad Air 3 is a rumored tablet that hasn't gotten much attention as far as the rumor mill is concerned, but things are quickly picking up as we move further into 2016, especially as we get closer to a possible Apple event that could go down next month.

Here's what we know so far about the iPad Air 3 release and what rumors say about the upcoming tablet, as well as what we can probably expect.

    Better Performance Better Performance

This one's a no doubter, just like with every new iPad that Apple announces. The iPad Air 3 will receive a performance boost, most likely with an upgrade to an A9 processor instead of the A8X and most likely sticking with 2GB of memory like before.

However, a recent report from DigiTimes suggests that the new tablet could get as much as 4GB of RAM, which would match the iPad Pro's 4GB of RAM if true. DigiTimes has had a shaky reputation, so we're taking this one with a grain of salt for now, but we wouldn't be surprised to see iPad Pro-like specs, including an A9X processor if we're lucky.

Of course, it probably won't be a huge performance upgrade from the iPad Air 2, as it usually never is, but a faster processor never hurts, and if you're in the market for a new iPad, grabbing the iPad Air 3 will be the best option at that point.

Apple's mini mania: New 4inch iPhone will be called the SE and new 9.7inch tablet will be a 'smaller iPad Pro'

  • Apple event is rumoured to take place in the week of 14 March
  • 'iPad Pro mini' set to be unveiled
  • Apple also expected to debut new Watch straps See the latest Apple news updates at www.dailymail.co.uk/apple

Apple's eagerly anticipated 'mini iPhone' has been revealed in leaked drawings, and now even its name has been uncovered.

The new handset will be called the iPhone SE, standing for special edition, and will launch next months alongside a smaller iPad Pro with a 9.7inch screen, according to 9to5Mac.

The products are set to be unveiled at a special March 15th event alongside new colours and band designs for the firm's smartwatch.

    Scroll down for video

The new handset is 'essentially the 2013 iPhone 5s with significant internal hardware and software upgrades' according to 9to5Mac.

'Sources say that Apple has decided to drop the "5" from the device's name and simply call it the iPhone SE,' the site said.

'This will mark the first iPhone upgrade without a number in its name and would logically remove it from a yearly update cycle.'

The smaller iPad Pro will have nearly identical features and specifications as the bigger model, with a A9X processor and RAM upgrades from the 12.9-inch model, called the Air.

It will also include the 12.9-inch model's updated display technology to support the controversial Apple Pencil.

Earlier this week 9to5Mac claimed it has the first drawings of it from a case making company.'Our sources have said that the new device is essentially the 2013 iPhone 5s with significant internal hardware and software upgrades,' it said.

'The case maker source tells us that the product's dimensions are indistinguishable from the iPhone 5s, meaning that the new device will fit inside of existing iPhone 5s cases.'

Tim Cook, Apple Chief Executive Officer introduces the new iPad Pro during an Apple launch event last year. A smaller, 9.7inch version is expected to be unveiled next month.

The schematics do show small changes - the sleep/wake/power button has been relocated to the side, for instance.

Apple is gearing up to reveal the latest version of its iPad Air  as well as new Apple Watch models at an event rumoured for March 15th - and they will go on sale just three days later.

The revamped tablet will likely be called iPad Air 3 and feature a 9.7-inch screen, much smaller than the firm's latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The sleep/wake/power button has been relocated to the side in the latest case specs.

The rounded edges previously rumoured have also disappeared from the design.

The Cupertino-based company is also expected to reveal a new 4-inch iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 5se at the event, according to 9to5Mac.

'Apple is currently planning to introduce a new 4-inch iPhone dubbed the 'iPhone 5se' and a new iPad Air at an event on Tuesday, March 15th, then put the products up for sale online and in retail stores as early as Friday, March 18th, according to sources,' said 9to5mac.

'Apple is unlikely to offer pre-orders for the new devices, according to sources who cautioned that the plans could still change.'

The smaller iPad Pro will also include support for apple's pencil, it has been claimed.

It would be the first revamp to the iPad Air since October 2014, 9to5Mac noted, while the iPad mini got a boost last autumn along with the unveiling of the iPad Pro.

Rumours suggest the iPad Air 3 will have a rear-facing LED flash so users can take better photos in low light, as well as better speaker grills for improved audio.

It's possible the tablet will also work with the Apple Pencil, which was originally intended to work with the iPad Pro.

The super-sized tablet launched in November and has a 12.9-inch screen with 5.9 million pixels. It weighs just 1.57lbs (712 grams) and is 0.3 inches (6.9mm) thick.

The Cupertino-based company is also expected to reveal a new four-inch iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 5se (rumoured to be shown right, along an iPhone 5) sometime during the week of March 14

Apple will hope its Air revamp will make people want to buy a new iPad, as sales of the tablet have fallen by almost a quarter over the course of a year.

    APPLE IN FIGURES

Apple now has $216 billion (£151 billiion) in cash

Sold 74.8 million iPhones in the three months ending 26 December.

First-quarter net profit rose 1.9 percent to $18.36 billion (£12.85 billion).

Rise in iPhone shipments was the smallest since the second fiscal quarter of 2013.

iPad sales were $16.12 million (£11.26 million) down 21% year-over-year.

    Mac sales down 3% year-over-year.

Apple is also testing a version of iOS with a Classroom app that could boost sales of its tablets to schools.

Earlier this week, Apple announced a first-quarter net profit rise of 1.9 percent to $18.36 billion, (£12.85 billion) while revenue increased 1.7 percent to $75.87 billion (£53.02 billion).

While both were records for the company, the figures fell short of analyst expectations.

It reported lower-than-expected iPhone sales in the latest quarter, its slowest-ever growth in shipments, as the company began to feel the effects of economic softness in the critical Chinese market.

So a new, highly desirable handset would help the situation.

As a result, Apple is set to reveal the iPhone 5se, which is predicted to boast a faster A9 processor, M9 chip, more storage, better cameras and a NFC chip so users will be able to buy goods using Apple Pay.

The handset will likely have softer edges like the iPhone 6 and it is hoped it will halt ailing iPhone sales.

Apple said on Tuesday it sold 74.8 million iPhones in the three months ending 26 December, the first full quarter of sales of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

Apple is also expected to show off a new range of watch bands, including a black version of the Milanese Loop (pictured), a new colours for Hermes straps and another line of bands made from a new material

This rise in iPhone shipments was the smallest since the second fiscal quarter of 2013.

Apple is additionally expected to show off a new range of watch bands, including a black version of the Milanese Loop, a new colours for Hermes straps and another line of bands made from a new material at the March event.

The tech giant's boss Tim Cook said the Apple Watch sold particularly well in December - possibly because people bought the devices as Christmas presents.

He said of the company's earnings: 'Our team delivered Apple's biggest quarter ever, thanks to the world's most innovative products and all-time record sales of iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV.'

It's believed Apple will release an operating system update soon after the event, which could include Night Shift to improve people's sleep, for the new handset and iPad Air 3.

APPLE UNVEILS 'NIGHT MODE' TO HELP PEOPLE SLEEP BETTER

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled a new 'night mode' for iOS devices designed to help owners sleep.

The new 'night shift' mode was shown off as part of a beta version of iOS 9.3, the firm's next update.

Other improvements include an education mode for teachers, and updated news and health apps.

The new 'night shift' mode was unveiled as part of a beta version of iOS9.3, the firm's next update

'Many studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep,' Apple said.

'Night Shift uses your iOS device's clock and geolocation to determine when it's sunset in your location.

'Then it automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of th e spectrum, making it easier on your eyes.

Apple to launch a smaller iPad Pro, not an iPad Air 3

It's been widely believed that Apple would launch an iPad Air 3 during its 15 March event. It now seems that the tablet making its debut next month will, in fact, be a 9.7in follow-up to the new iPad Pro, not the iPad Air.

9to5Mac has reported Apple will be announcing a 9.7in iPad Pro to go alongside its 12.9in predecessor, drawing a parallel to Apple's approach with the MacBook Pro and its 13in and 15in variants. What essentially amounts to a naming choice makes sense when you consider reports that the new tablet will share the iPad Pro's A9X processor and RAM, and is rumoured to support Apple Pencil.

The site also claims that Apple is preparing a smaller version of its Smart Keyboard attachment, and that the 9.7in tablet will have the larger iPad Pro's quad stereo speakers. In terms of pricing, it's believed the tablet will be closer to the iPad Air 2 than the iPad Pro.

iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro

Last year, Apple decided not to push a sequel to the iPad Air 2 in favour of the iPad Pro. While the lack of an iPad Air 3 made some believe that particular tablet range had run out of… well, air, a series of rumours now suggest a new tablet could be coming in a matter of weeks. It's thought that Tim Cook et al are planning a launch on 15 March. Citing anonymous sources, 9to5Mac claims that Apple will hold an event to premier the iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro, alongside a 4in iPhone 5se and a range of new Apple Watch models.

Elsewhere, there are reports that the new tablet could be getting an 8-megapixel rear camera, a fingerprint sensor and maybe even a 4K display. With all this in mind, here's everything we know about the iPad so far.

iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro at a glance
  • Apple's next tablet, now believed to be a new iPad Pro
  • 15 March 2016
  • Around £399, although the Pro branding may push this up slightly.
  • iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro release date

Those waiting for news about the sequel to Apple's iPad Air 2 at Apple's September 2015 live event will have wept onto the glossy surface of their super-thin tablets, as Apple declined to make any reference to the iPad Air 3. It's likely that, with the release of the iPad Pro and the iPad mini 4, Apple wanted to avoid iPad overload – too many new tablets, and customers won't know what to throw their money at. If Apple wants the iPad Pro to forge an identity for itself, it makes sense to give the jumbo slab some breathing space. It doesn't want the Air 3 awkwardly hanging around, dragging adoring gazes away from the shiny new toy in the room.

9to5Mac claims Apple will announce the iPad during an event on 15 March. Chinese tech site MyDrivers has similarly gone ahead and pinned the iPad Air 3 / new Pro release date to March 2016. This would certainly give Apple a chance to strike back at the casual market missed by the iPad Pro, although it bucks the trend set by the first two Airs, which both launched in the autumn.

We'd say that waiting until the end of 2016 to release an updated Air with the technology we've seen in the iPad Pro wouldn't be in Apple's interests. Tim Cook and co normally have a March announcement – last year's being the MacBook Retina – so it makes sense for a slot to go to the new iPad.

iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro price

Apple is pretty consistent with pricing so, seeing as the previous two Airs launched with a £399 base price, we'd expect pretty much the same from the iPad Air 3. However, if recent reports are to be believed and Apple intends to place the new tablet in the iPad Pro range, that figure could be pushed up somewhat.

One change we'd like to see is what £399 gets you in terms of storage. The current 16GB is, frankly, a bit ridiculous for the increasingly demanding apps and OS requirements. 32GB would be a much more sensible base storage.

iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro specs

It looks like the new iPad will be inheriting a few things from its extra-large predecessor, as reports claim Apple's much-rumoured new tablet will feature the iPad Pro's A9X chip.

"In March, Apple intends to announce an updated iPad and smaller-screen iPhone featuring the latest A9X and A9 chips, according to a person familiar with the plans, who wasn't authorised to comment publicly," Bloomberg claims.

As well as pinning the iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro to a release date in March, MyDrivers has listed a range of rumoured specs including a 9.7in screen and 4K screen resolution of 2,334 x 3,112. If true, that's a significant step up from the 1,536 x 2,048 resolution on the iPad Air 2.

The same site says that the new iPad will be powered by Apple's latest A9 or A9X chipset, between 2GB and 4GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front camera. The new iPad will also allegedly be a wafer-thin 5mm thick, and have an IP rating for water and dust resistance. If true, that would make it the second Apple device, after the Apple Watch, to come with an IP rating.

It's not entirely good news, though: the site also claims the new iPad's battery capacity will see a reduction from the 7,340mAh cell on the iPad Air 2. It's worth noting, however, that the report doesn't seem to cite any clear sources for all this information – so take it with a pinch of salt.

We say it's likely that the iPad Air 3 / new iPad Pro will get the original iPad Pro's A9X chip and 4GB of RAM. This could provide the necessary boost to convince users to make the jump from the still-great iPad Air 2 into something slimmer, but almost as powerful, as the larger iPad Pro.

    3D Touch (or lack thereof)

The iPhone 6s' headline feature was the inclusion of the pressure-sensitive 3D Touch display. It's an impressive mechanic and there are already signs that Samsung is looking to mimic its success with the Galaxy S7, but don't expect to see it in the new iPad.

According to an investor's note obtained by Apple Insider, renowned KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple won't be using the 3D Touch in the upcoming iPad. The reasons are practical, with Kuo citing problems in the supply chain for 3D Touch components.

Kuo has called 3D Touch "one of the most severe production bottlenecks in iPhone 6s supply chain," and believes the supply chain to be currently below 30% utilisation.

The high-end iPad Pro doesn't feature 3D Touch, but it's possible that Apple will look to expand the scope of the feature in future iPad releases. Kuo's comments, however, suggest that Cook and co won't be able to do this in time for the new tablet's expected launch in Q1 2016.

    Running out of Air?

Another possibility is that Apple is putting the future of the iPad Air on hold indefinitely, or at least until the company has an idea of how well the iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 perform. The tablet market is changing, as evidenced by Apple's decision to change tack with the iPad Pro. With Apple's recent reports indicating a 19% decline year-on-year in iPad sales – a four-year low – the company is understandably shifting focus.

What does that mean for the future position of the iPad Air in Apple's coterie of tablets? For the time being, the iPad Air 2 is a perfectly capable device, meaning an update isn't desperately needed. However, if Apple brings out a new iteration, which is still highly likely, it's hard to see how Apple will avoid it clashing with the iPad Pro in some shape or form.

Ultimately, we'll have to see on 15 March whether Apple decides to push its new tablet into the iPad Air or iPad Pro camp. Given that the upcoming iPad reportedly shares more than a few things with its large predecessor, we'd say it makes sense to see a smaller Pro at the March event.

Source: Apple to launch a smaller iPad Pro, not an iPad Air 3

    Thursday, 25 February 2016

Apple’s next tablet may be a smaller iPad Pro, rather than the iPad Air 3

There's a gap in Apple's tablet lineup. While 2015 saw the release of a new iPad mini, as well as the jumbo-sized iPad Pro, the last time we got a new iPad with the tablet's traditional 9.7-inch screen size was all the way back in 2014, when the iPad Air 2 launched. And while the Air 2 is still a very capable tablet, it's more than overdue for a refresh. We've been looking forward to Apple's rumored March event for when the company finally might step up with the new iPad Air 3 model, but a now a new report suggests we're about to see a significant shift in the company's branding as Apple gives us not an iPad Air 3, but a new 9.7-inch version of the iPad Pro.

What's in a name, anyway? Apple appears to be cooling to the "Air" branding on its laptops, and that move could extend over to its tablets, as well. Certainly, from rumors we've heard about possible Apple Pencil support and the presence of a Smart Connector for use with a new Smart Keyboard accessory, what we've been calling the iPad Air 3 already sounded like it had a lot in common with the iPad Pro already.

So far, we'd been associating the "Pro" moniker with physically larger hardware, but if we look at it as support for these kind of accessories, instead, it makes perfect sense to call the new 9.7-inch iPad a Pro.

Reportedly, Apple would discontinue sales of the original iPad Air (and the old iPad mini 2) when this 9.7-inch iPad Pro arrives, though the iPad Air 2 could stick around for the foreseeable future.

This also takes a look at some details regarding the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, two devices that just arrived and go on sale in the United States in March.

Speck CandyShell Grip Galaxy S6 Edge Case Review - 7

Verizon outs Android 5.1.1 update for the Sony Xperia Z3v and the Z2 Tablet

Verizon has started pushing out over-the-air updates to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for both the Xperia Z3v smartphone and the Z2 Tablet. This rollout might of course be considered a bit late since the next version of the OS, Marshmallow, has already been out for months. Then again, perhaps the 'better late than never' mantra applies here.

For both devices, the new software version is 23.4.B.0.319. Aside from everything that Google included in the 5.1.1 release of Android (including security patches), Sony's update also brings with it HD Voice support for the Xperia Z3v.

As always in these cases, the rollout will surely be staged, so it might take a few days before it reaches every single Z3v and Z2 Tablet out there. If you're impatient you can manually check for the availability of the new software by going to the appropriate section in Settings. Full release details for both devices can be found at the Source links below.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow Release Details

With Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow release pushing ahead, we want to take a look at the most important things to know right now about the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow release for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

For weeks we've seen Samsung Galaxy S6 Android Marshmallow details tease owners of the regular variant, the Galaxy S6 Edge, and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Until recently, those details didn't include an actual roll out.

Samsung has finally rolled out the red carpet for the Galaxy S6's Marshmallow update and it appears that the update is starting to roll out, in limited fashion, to Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update takes the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge from Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to Google's most up-to-date OS.Galaxy-S6-Edge-4-720x480

With a widespread Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow release now underway, we want to take a look at the most important things Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus owners need to know about the release, Android 6.0.1, and more.

We'll continue to update this with new information as we get it. Samsung's Android roll outs are slow and the Galaxy S6 Android Marshmallow release will almost certainly take several months to hit every single device.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow Release Date

Earlier this month, Samsung confirmed plans to start rolling out the Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

As expected, the first Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Android 6.0.1 updates started rolling out in South Korea.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Marshmallow update just started rolling out on SK Telecom today bringing a huge file, a new build and tons of new features to the larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. We expect the update to spread in the near future.

    Galaxy-S6-Edge

If you own a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in Korea, you'll want to keep your eyes out for the OTA.

You'll also want to keep your eyes peeled if you own a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

    iPhone-6s-vs-Galaxy-S6-11

The Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) and Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925F) Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates are reportedly rolling out in the UK right now on the country's Vodafone network.

Those on Vodafone should check their phone throughout the week for the OTA file. The update comes with a XXU3DPB8 build number.

According to Galaxy Club, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Marshmallow updates are also hitting Vodafone in the Netherlands. The build there is also XXU3DPB8.

    Other Release Details

Now that Samsung's confirmed plans to release the Galaxy S6 Android 6.0.1 update in Korea and Europe, we are starting to see some other dominoes start to fall.

Canadian carrier Telus has confirmed a trio of dates for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow release. Up first is the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The company has tentatively scheduled its Marshmallow roll out for March 9th. The carrier is planning to tack on a security update as well.

Telus has also confirmed a Galaxy S6 Edge Marshmallow update for March 16th (also with security patches) and a Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update for April 13th.

It's important to note that these dates are "approximate and subject to change."

T-Mobile USA is planning Android Marshmallow updates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge+.

The carrier confirmed these updates several weeks ago and none of them have moved past the "Manufacturer Development" stage. This means that they're still in Samsung's lab undergoing testing. It still needs to head to T-Mobile for internal testing.

A report from last year suggests that all five major U.S. carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular) will be pushing Android Marshmallow out to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Not that this comes as a surprise. The Galaxy S6 is less than a year old.

    Galaxy-S6-Edge-8

Vocal carriers like Rogers (Canada), Vodafone (Australia), Optus (Australia), and Telstra (Australia) continue to remain silent about their plans.

Galaxy S6 Marshmallow Update: What's New

Thanks to the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow beta, Samsung's announcements, and the company's very own Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Marshmallow consumers guide, we know what to expect from the updates in Korea, Poland and around the world.

The Galaxy S6 Android Marshmallow updates will deliver a number of new features, enhancements and fixes to the two flagship smartphones including changes to the look of app icons and a UI that prominently features the color white.

Samsung's updates come with Google Now on Tap which allows you to quickly bring up information on whatever you're looking at simply by holding down the home button. They also feature better control over app permissions, improved fingerprint support, and the battery saving feature Doze.

    Samsung-Galaxy-S6

The company's also outlined changes to Samsung Internet 4.0 and Cross App boost functionality.

Samsung's new browser comes with improved security and functionality including a new Secret Mode that's very similar to Chrome's Incognito mode in that it doesn't store "browsing history, cookies, passwords, auto-fill data or anything else."

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update's new Internet 4.0 app also brings browsing support for Samsung's Gear VR.

    Galaxy-S6-Marsh-2

In addition, the Cross App boost functionality "allows users to operate certain apps from within other apps."

Our Android 6.0 vs. Android 5.0 walkthrough and this gallery of photos will give you a better idea about what to expect from the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update. So will Samsung's official Galaxy S6 Marshmallow consumer guide.

    Android 6.0.1

Samsung isn't rolling out the old Android 6.0 update. It's rolling out the newest version dubbed Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Android 6.0.1 is a whole lot different than the Android 6.0 update and there are some notable changes Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users will want to be aware of as the roll out grows in size.

Samsung's Android 6.0.1 update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge should bring the following along with it:

  • Additional quick settings toggles for Private Mode in the status bar.
  • New emoji characters (Android 6.0.1 brought more than 200 to Nexus users).
  • Improved visibility of notification panel icons.
  • When a fingerprint isn't recognized, you will only get vibration feedback.
  • A new 'Install overnight' option that will let you install an update at night between the hours of 2 to 5 AM.
  • Changes to the Galaxy S6 Edge panel.
  • The changes to the Galaxy S6 Edge panel can be seen in the video above and on Samsung's website. The company outlines the biggest changes coming to the Edge models with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

For more on Android 6.0.1, take a look at our walkthrough. It will take you step-by-step through the differences between Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1.

    Galaxy-S6-Android-6-0-1

It's important to note that not every Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update will be created equal. Carriers typically put their own spin on these updates and we expect to see mostly minor but maybe some big differences between the updates in the United States and around the world.

Most carriers are mum about their plans for Marshmallow so we'll just have to wait and see what those are.

    Marshmallow Problems

Google's Android 6.0.1 update (and Android 6.0 update for that matter) has been problematic for Nexus smartphone and tablet users. We expect some of the same problems to plague Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Marshmallow upgrades.

Samsung put these updates through a public beta process. And while the beta process likely caught some of the more glaring problems, there's no way it caught them all.

Problems always slip through the cracks and Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge owners will want to prepare for Android 6.0.1 issues.

    Android-Marshmallow-main

We've been taking a close look at Android 6.0.1 problems in the weeks since the updates release. We encourage you to get familiar with the most common problems (battery life, etc) and get a feel for some potential fixes for those issues.

ZTE unveils an Android tablet that doubles up as a portable projector

Posted on: 10:21 AM IST Feb 24, 2016

Chinese manufacturer ZTE is at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to present its latest range of devices, including one curiosity -- the Spro Plus -- a hybrid gadget that's a portable projector and a touchscreen tablet all rolled into one.

As a successor to the Spro 2 -- ZTE's Android pico projector with built-in touch screen -- the ZTE Spro Plus has the form factor and power of an Android tablet. Presented at the Barcelona trade fair and due to go on sale by summer 2016, the device has an 8.4-inch screen (2560x1440 pixels), 3GB of RAM, 32 to 128GB of memory (depending on the version) and a microSD card slot.

The Spro Plus has a built-in laser projector with brightness up to 500 lumens, which can project an 80-inch image from a distance of 2.4 meters.

The Spro Plus has a built-in laser projector with brightness up to 500 lumens, which can project an 80-inch image from a distance of 2.4 meters. The projector will be available in WiFi and 4G/WiFi models but there's no word yet on how much this two-in-one might cost. Note that ZTE counts over 500,000 unit sales of its Spro 1 and 2 projectors.

Alongside the Spro Plus, the Chinese manufacturer unveiled its new generation of Blade smartphones -- the V7 and V7 Lite -- at MWC 2016. These are stylish 5.2-inch and 5-inch mid-range Android handsets, expected to land in the spring in selected countries.

ZTE also presented an original accessory, in the form of a connected ring. Dubbed the iCharming, this micro wearable can be used for activity tracking or to take photos via a smartphone camera, and has an SOS function to send an emergency message to a selected contact. As yet, no official release date has been announced.

Tablets with LTE don't come cheap, unless it's one of these new Lenovos

It's been a slow year for tablets, but that's not stopping Lenovo. The company unveiled a trio of new models at Mobile World Congress 2016. All three are reasonably priced, with a 10-inch model geared towards business use starting at $199, and a 7- and 8-inch LTE-packing pair that start at $129 and $149 respectively.

The Lenovo Tab 3 10 Business, available as Wi-Fi only or with an LTE connection, features a durable design with a Gorilla Glass 3 panel. It's an attractively affordable point-of-sales system and it comes pre-loaded with Android for Work, an app that lets you separate your business apps and docs from your personal ones.

The 10-inch tablet houses a microSD card slot for expanding its storage and a full-USB port for easily connecting a flash drive or mouse. Rolling out in July, its US pricing starts at $199 for the 32GB model and $299 for the 64GB model. Pricing hasn't been announced yet for the UK and Australia, but the 3 2GB model and 64GB model convert to £140 and £210, or AU$280 and AU$420.

On the other end of the spectrum, we find the petite Lenovo Tab 3 pair. The 7- and 8-inch tablets make up for their mediocre specs with rock-bottom pricing. The 7-inch model with LTE starts at $129, while the 8-inch variant starts at $99 if you only need Wi-Fi and $149 for the version that also has LTE. Pricing and availability in UK and Australia for the Lenovo tablets have yet to be announced, but the Lenovo Tab 3 7 converts to £90 and AU$181. The Wi-Fi only version of the 8-incher converts to £70 and AU$140, and the LTE model converts to £105 and AU$210.

Though both of these budget tablets are simple, unremarkable and bring nothing new to the table, they're very reasonably priced if you take the LTE connection in to account. Models with cellular capabilities tend to be rather expensive, so it's refreshing to see budget-centric models. The specs are mediocre at best, but should work fine for streaming video, browsing the Web and light gaming. Both are expected to hit US stores in June.

With a widespread Samsung Galaxy S6 Marshmallow release getting closer, we want to take a look at the most important things Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus owners need to know about the release, Android 6.0.1, and more.

As expected, the first Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Android 6.0.1 updates are rolling out in South Korea.

Galaxy-S6-EdgeSamsung says that it "will make separate announcements on details of OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers' requirements."

If you own a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in Korea, you'll want to keep your eyes out for the OTA. You'll also want to keep your eyes peeled if you own a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge in the United Kingdom.

    Other Release Details

Now that Samsung's confirmed plans to release the Galaxy S6 Android 6.0.1 update in Korea, we are starting to see some other dominoes start to fall.

SamMobile recently got their hands on the official Marshmallow consumer guide and it takes you through the very basics of Marshmallow and its changes. From Doze to the app changes to the new UI colors, it's all there. Click here to download the powerpoint file.

We'll keep you posted about Galaxy-specific Android 6.0.1 problems once the roll out picks up the pace in Korea, Europe and the United States.

In line with the upcoming Android N version in the second quarter of the year, its upcoming name has been revealed, along with its new features.

Set as a successor to Android Marshmallow, Nutella and Nougat are reportedly two new possible nomenclature for the upcoming Google platform, according to Tech Radar. As per the publication, Nutella is a potential name for the platform, after Google acquired Nestle's permission to use Kitkat for its previous Android version.

On the other hand, Nougat is another candidate for the new name of Google's Android N. According to recent reports, Nougat is viewed as a general term, leaving the tech giant with no problem if it used it to name its forthcoming platform version. In addition, Nougat is seen as a consistent name, along with the previous Android platform versions like Donut, Eclair, Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, Lollipop, and Marshmallow.

With Google yet to finalize the name of its Android N, also known as 7.0, it has also been revealed that the upcoming platform will utilize a multi-tasking feature, according to Techworm. As per the publication, Android N devices are set to feature "more polished" multi-window mode, in addition to the transition from Java API to OpenJDK.

Apple iPad Air 3 release date and specs rumors: Top business features

New York: With the iPad Air 2 people said that Apple had taken the perfect tablet and somehow made it even better. So where does it go from there? We're not expecting a big leap with the iPad Air 3, but some things are bound to change.

    Apple Pencil support

The iPad Air 3 would include support for the Apple Pencil, an active stylus with full pressure sensitivity that lets you sketch and take notes on the tablet's display. The accessory provides a smoother and more natural handwriting experience.

    Smart keyboard support

Rumors indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant might be readying a smaller version of smart keyboard for iPad Air 3. The Smart Keyboard, which has a built-in kickstand that props up your iPad while you type, can augment the iPad Air 3's image as a productivity machine.

    Sharper display

The iPad Air 3 is said to have approximately the same dimensions as the iPad Air 2, with a similar 9.7-inch display. But reports suggest that the Cupertino-based firm may be packing a lot more pixels into the new slate's screen, for a resolution as high as 4K.

    Four speakers

According to the rumors, the iPad Air 3 could come with 4 speakers, compared to two on the previous model. The extra speakers will make videoconferencing sessions clearer and louder.

    Faster performance

The iPad Air 3 will have 4GB of RAM onboard - twice as much RAM as the older iPad Air 2. The extra memory could go a long way toward improving the iPad Air 3's multitasking capabilities.
