HP unveils enterprise tablet running Windows 10

As Microsoft prepares to roll out its Windows 10 operating system for PCs and tablets next month, HP is planning to launch an enterprise tablet running the OS in August.

The new eight-inch Pro Tablet 608 has a number of features specifically designed for enterprise mobility users, such as videoconferencing support and built-in security features, as well as improved audio support for Microsoft digital assistant Cortana.

To improve the videoconferencing experience, the tablet has dual front-facing stereo speakers and microphones, DTS Studio Sound, noise-cancelling software and a front-facing 2 megapixel camera.

Weighing in at 1 pound, the tablet has a 2048 x 1536 high resolution display that adjusts to lighting conditions and a 4:3 aspect ratio designed for business productivity apps, HP explained in a release.

To improve the tablet's durability in enterprise environments, it is designed with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and a metal-reinforced chassis and has up to eight hours of battery life.

The tablet runs on a quad-core Intel Atom Z8500 processor and has up to 4 GB of memory and 128 GB eMMc storage. It includes a USB-C port for fast charging and data transfer.

HP said it is offering a version of the Pro Tablet 608 for the retail industry that can accommodate third-party mobile payment terminals and most digital wallets.

The Pro Tablet 608 running the current Windows 8.1 Pro OS will be available next month for $479. Pricing on the Windows 10 version, available in August, was not disclosed.

In addition to the tablet launch, HP announced that it is updating its cloud-based HP Touchpoint Manager designed for IT departments at small and medium-sized businesses.

With the updates, IT pros can access and troubleshoot Windows-based devices remotely from their desktop or mobile device. In addition, IT admins can centrally deploy and manage company mobile apps. The basic subscription for the cloud-based service is available for $2 per user, per month; the Pro subscription is available for $10 per user, per month.

Finally, HP is working with Lufthansa Systems on a mobile app designed for cabin crews. The mCabin solution from Lufthansa Systems coupled with the HP ElitePad 1000 G2 offers commercial mobility for aviation customers.
