Nexus Android Nougat Release: 5 Things to Get Excited About

Google has promised to deliver the Android N update sometime this summer, and owners with the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P and more are getting excited. With the Android 7.0 Nougat release date and possibly new Nexus phones near, we want to go over a few details for users.

Earlier this year and way ahead of schedule Google announced and released a developer preview of Android N in March, confirmed more details in May, and in July released the 5th and final preview. Being in final form the official release date is almost here.

Last month Google officially announced Android N will be called Android 7.0 Nougat, and then stated it's still on track for a release this summer. Most of the features, UI changes and behavior is now final and more will be coming when it's available to everyone. Below are the exciting details Android users need to know about.

On stage at IO Google detailed multiple exciting features that will be in Android Nougat, many of which we already knew about. A revamped notification system, improved performance and battery life, multi-window mode to run two apps at the same time, doze battery changes and much more. There's too much to list, but our breakdown below goes over many of the new additions owners can expect to see.

Update: At the end of June multiple leaks and rumors surfaced about Google's new Nexus phones for 2016, a redesigned navigation bar in Android N, to even a new Google Support screen sharing and 24/7 live help app similar to Amazon Mayday. With all this starting to surface, a release could be coming sooner than we all think.

When the time comes Google will begin rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat to Nexus devices first, all of which have been participating in the beta. Those are the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and the Pixel C tablet. Missing from that list is the older Nexus 5 smartphone and popular Nexus 7 tablet. They could see N, but we'll have to wait and see. In even bigger news, we should see new Nexus devices too.

Ahead of the official release of Android 7.0 Nougat this summer we're starting to see some odd behavior. One lucky Nexus 6P owner received an official and near-final version of Android 7.0 on July 29th. He received an update meant for Google employees only. It's a newer version of Android N than the latest developer preview, the beta tag has been removed, and it's also running the latest August security patch. Possibly hinting at the fact that Google is getting very close to releasing Android N.

It's a small 50MB update likely aimed at fixing bugs ahead of the global release date. Still, it's odd to see regular users receive an update that wasn't intended for the public. Is this a sign of things to come in August?

As mentioned earlier, Google promised an Android N release sometime this summer. Those months consists of June, July and August, although technically the first day of summer was June 2oth. That means we can expect to hear more soon, followed by the highly anticipated arrival of the new software before the end of next month.

Now that summer is almost over and Android N has been named Android Nougat, the release date should be here any moment now. We're now on the 5th and final developer preview, and Google is still saying they're on track for a "summer release". What does that mean?

We go over more information in the slideshow below, but one thing we've seen is a new developer preview beta once a month since March. Around the middle of the month Google has released new versions, with the 4th preview in June and now the 5th and final preview on July 18th. If we follow that schedule Android 7.0 Nougat should be released around the globe around August 15-20th. Although to meet their promise Google has until the last day in August for summer, and the end of September for "Q3".

Here are a few things everyone should be excited about, especially Nexus owners.

As we said above nothing is confirmed yet. However, with the name now official the release date should be right around the corner.

This year Google put out the developer preview nearly three months earlier than prior models, so it's safe to assume it will be released 2-4 months earlier as well. That means that any day now the company will begin talking about it, sharing information, and gearing up for the release.

If you own any of the Nexus devices we mentioned earlier the beta is available now, and you'll be first to get Android N once it's released. The search giant hasn't made any announcements, and we likely won't see an event for the release. Instead, it will just begin arriving on smartphones and tablets around the globe. Well, unless we get new Nexus devices too.
