Microsoft had a lot of exciting news to share on 6 October relating to Windows 10 devices and one of the stars of the show was the Surface Pro 4, as per the rumours. We explain what you need to know about the Surface Pro 4 release date, price and specs. Updated on 8/10/15 with information about the 1TB model. Read our Surface Pro 4 hands-on review.

You can see how the launch happened here where Microsoft also announced the Lumia 950 smartphones, a Lumia 550, the Microsoft Band 2, and the shock announcement of the Surface Book laptop.

Surface Pro 4 UK release date and price

The Surface Pro 4 is available in various models and starts at £749/$899. You can pre-order it 7 October from Microsoft's store ahead of its 26 October release date. However, we'll have to wait until 12 November in the UK for it to go on sale.

The Pro 3 cost from £639/$799 so the new model is a little more expensive. The Surface Pro 3 is still available at a lower price of £549. Also see: How to get Windows 10 now.

Update: We've added all the UK prices below now the Pro 4 is available to pre-order and the 1TB model is not available on the English store. In response, we got the following statement from Microsoft which does mean a great deal but implies the 1TB model might be made available in the future.

"We do not comment on pending market availability. That said, we have taken and will continue to take a measured and phased approach to Surface Pro 4 availability to meet customer demand and partner expectations."

Surface Pro 4 specifications

As you might expect, the Surface Pro 4 is essentially the same device – a tablet with a detachable keyboard and a kick stand – but that doesn't mean Microsoft hasn't made changes and upgrades. There are quite a lot so let's run through them.

For starters, the device is thinner at just 8.4mm – Microsoft said it only stopped to ensure the Pro 4 could have full-size USB. This also means it's lighter at 766g for the Core M model. See also: Which laptop to buy: laptop buying advice, and the best laptops.

The screen is slightly larger at 12.3in and has 60 percent more pixels(2736x1824), 5 million to be exact resulting in a pixel density of 267ppi. Microsoft calls it PixelSense and it includes a 0.4mm Gorilla Glass front, photo-aligned negative LC oxide and a 1.1mm backlight unit. Inside is a new hybrid cooling system, too.

Core specs have been beefed up with up to a 6th-generation Intel Skylake processor, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD (see the models available above). Microsoft says the Surface Pro 4 is 50 percent faster than the MacBook Air – take that Apple! It's also 30 percent faster than the Surface Pro 3.

Surface Pro 4 Pen

The Surface Pro 4 is packed with ports, too. It's still got USB 3.0, a Mini-DisplayPort and a Micro-SD card slot. An 8Mp camera is there if you need it.

The new Surface Pen comes in five different colours but that's not the only change. It has a year-long battery life, supports 1,024 levels of pressure, features a tail eraser, connects magnetically and also has interchangeable tips. It also comes with the Pro 4.

The new TypeCover is still optional and, like the tablet itself, is thinner and lighter. There are five colours and it has faster and quieter keys. Those keys have a 1.3mm travel and a 19mm pitch. Furthermore a new glass trackpad is 40 percent larger and some have an integrated fingerprint scanner now - these are designed for the Pro 3 since the Pro 4 supports facial recognition. It's good news for existing owners as the new keyboard works with the Surface Pro 4. It costs £109 and you can pre-order it now.
